and keep the gangster scenes - maybe refresh - but a great genre as this is a history of the movies... replace Alien with a more current Sci Fi ( lotr would be great ) - maybe talk to Mr Lucas about a SW scene

>>>I love GMR<<<

I do if you get a good cast member. Even more that the Jungle Cruise, the cast member makes or breaks this one.

The days of classic attractions are coming to a close, just as the days of theme parks themselves are similarly waning.

At some point someone will step up and create that next big thing, but sadly, it doesn't look like it will be Disney.

To create something big takes vision. Something Walt Disney had (and a few imagineers have), but as a collective publically held company, Disney does not have. John Lasseter and Joe Rohde are the closest we get I think (Tony Baxter retires soon no doubt).

>> I have posted a similar question but it was buried in anothe thread so in keeping with VBDAD's spirit I'll ask it here: how many attractions at WDW that have opened since 1993 will be considered classics and have the possibility of being around in 40 years (like Mansion, Pirates, Peter Pan, Small World and even things like Dumbo and the WDW RR).

Sorry for the semi-hijacking but I think my question follows quite logically from yours. <<

It's not buried. It's still alive, and well over on Four Parks: One Stale World. I think folks have just been slow to respond because that thread can go in so many directions. Maybe after the folks post on vbdad's thread they can jump over there, and play the Spirit Classic's Guessing Game. They are definetly related issues.

I think the demand for a true classic is still there. Look at the lines for the existing ones. Kids still love Mickey Mouse after over 75 years. Yes kids have a lot more play things now then some of us did growing up, but I really don't think it matters. Good entertainment is still good entertainment. WDW still packs them in, and will continue to pack them in if they would only return to the roots that Walt so dearly cared about. A kid is still a kid, and an adult is just an oversized kid. Everybody still loves a good time, and appreciates detail, and classic beauty. Even when they don't recognize why they like something so much, the underlying reasons are still there. There are still people out there that can dream, and provide classic entertainment. Case in point, look at the efforts of Joe Rohde, and his whole team of imagineers. People still want Classic attractions. It's just that lately the purse stings have been tightened, and budgets have been cut. I think both the talent, and demand or still there. The talent has perhaps been stiffled a tad, so it appears there's nobody there from the Disney old school of thought, but I think they are still out there. How many of you take your kids, and grand-kids to WDW. Now tell me how many of them don't fall in love with it. It's true that we, here on Disny forums are the exception rather than the rule. We are truly Disney fanatics. However look at the large number of people that spend their hard earned bucks to make the trek to the World year end, and year out. The classic Disney rides still draw them in, so i have to assume the demand is still there. Every ride can't be a classic (I guess they could with enough imagination, and money), but I think the demand is still there along with lesser forms of entertainment. Just good wholesome fun when presented as a complete package, with a mixture of offerings.

If we take EVERYTHING Disney into consideration I think you can make a strong arguement that WDW attractions themselves are watered down versions of their counterparts in California. For example look at PotC, WDW got half an attraction.

Also, your forgetting the parks in Japan. While eating in EPCOT a while back I once had a conversation ( while eating dinner in Germany ) with an Imagineer who explained that the parks in Japan for the "A list Imagineers". While DCA got the "B list Imagineers". Basically in Japan, no expense was spared or so I have been told.

Sadly, I agree with Spirit that Disney Corp is now run by penny counting marketing people. Its all about profits and that seems to over shadow all things Disney at this time.

I would also argue that althought the rides/ attractions at WDW are apparently stale there continues to be vast sums of money over the past decade spent building DVCs. Make no mistake, WDW knows where their cash cow/ big ticket item is "DVC".

I think what should also be mentioned that although most recent rides/ attractions may not be "E ticket", look at how many unique parks and unique resorts have been built at WDW over the past two decades. EPCOT Center is incredible as is DAK, WL, AKL, BW, YC, BC. Althought I'm not overly impressed with the park formly knows as MGM. It think WDW has made a tremendous job with "everything else in the world".

I guess a good way to sum it all up is that I believe that WDW has not lost its vision... its simply channeled its vision to "other" areas in the world, ie DVCs, resorts and more parks.

However I will contend there are 2 points that make this money use invalid to apply towards ride funds.

1. One is real estate and commodity
2. One gets 'immediate' return of cash for the investment

Money spent on DVC units is not money earmarked for attractions on any spreadsheet --they are separate buckets.

Pretty easy to convince a board/shareholders tospend on DVC and we will get x back immediately --

vs. spend $500M like they did on MissionSpace and endup with something that increased attendance not one iota.

Now listen,I want new attractions - especially in the MK ASAP - but when I read here people want them to lower admission, lower room rates and spend a few billion $ on rides - the math is faulty.

I am ok with higher prices if it means better maintenance, food, entertainment, and attractions. In fact that is my preferred model.
