It sounded like hell to me. I might suggest late January or early February for your next excursion to WDW when ever that might be. I'm sure you just hit it at a bad time for some reason. I know you've been told that before. That's no excuse for the quality of experience you had, but it seems extrodinarily bad even by today standards. It really only takes one truly bad experience to completely turn away from a Resort, even when it's Disney.

Dave just a question. You said the MK was "filthy". That is an extremely strong word to use. Can you please give some examples?

The Spirit's little guessing game's answers are ... enevlope please ... ToT at Studios and KS at DAK.

They, to me, represent the only type on immersive, themed, story-driven experiences that I can see being around in 40 years (again, this is attractions opened at WDW only and only since 1993).

There are two others that 'might' fall into that category. One would be Everest, but I'm going to need a lot of convincing on that one since it's never worked right since it debuted (and really isn't as special as some would have you believe -- uhm ... Joe Rohde isn't listening, is he?!?). The other would ... sadly ... be ... Pooh (the ride not the McPlayground) because of the characters it is based on, so even if it gets a lot of updating effects and such over time, it may be able to last (although remember that Snow White is on the replacement block at MK, so these things don't last forever).

But I don't see a whole lot of timeless attractions at WDW that have debuted in the last 15 years. I see a few good attractions, a lot of mediocre attractions and a few awful ones.

Oh, and I feel partly to blame for Dave's less than magical WDW trip of '06.

Had he arrived two weeks later when a certain Spirit was haunting DAK Lodge, I am sure he would have had a more magical time. At the very least, he would have had someone to drive him around so he wouldn't have had to rely on Disney transport!

I had a great time on THAT trip!

Maybe '06 was a breaking point for some of us. I was there in Aug. '06 and havn't been back. Everything felt tired and stale. Nothing they have added since is a gotta get there kind of attraction. And there is nothing interesting on the horizon.
For next summer, Sea World has Central FL's first flying coaster that will be wrapped around a manta ray aquarium. And Universal Studios will have Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit. A unique coaster with 1000s of songs to chose from for you ride. Then you get to edit your own music video. Then for 2010, IOA has Potter.

Universal certainly looks like THE place to be in a couple of years time! Certainly more appealling than Walt DVC World.

^^^^^^^^^^

heard the same thing when IOA opened , didn't pan out.

not trying to be defensive, but just remembering the buzz about how WDW would lose an entire demographic - and the issues it was goingto cause.

Maybe, but I don't know if I want to give them my money. When I look at DL and DLP where I seem to have consistent experiences whenever I go (main fluxuation is park hours, live streetmousphere schedule - something that was still impressive and better than DLP's, and wait times). I can live with those.

But with a school age child, where pulling them out of school is fined and counts against them, I think it will be a long time until we return.

also to be fair to WDW, the attitude of the cheerleaders parents (I felt like I was surrounded by a bunch of white trash sitcom characters) and my MIL being with us also undermined my enjoyment too.

Ok, was it filthy on it's own merits? Not necessarily. Was it filthy by Disney standards that I have been conditioned to (and remember Paris is my home park which can be pretty bad)? Yes.

It was a couple of years now, but these are the things I remember:

- the painted areas on the hub being black and having lots of old food stains and stickyness. (Remember when they used to spray them down)
- Toilets in Main Street and near Peter Pan being dirty and looking more like a truck stop than a Disney park - toilets overflowing etc.
- In Columbia Harbor House, they did not seem to be wiping down the tables and ours was really rank, even after getting babywipes and disinfectant wipes out.
- The quelines for Buzz and It's a Small World particularly stand out as being full of trash (remember when they used to send sweepers through the queue lines?).
- There was mold on the Splash Mountain log we were on which affected my wife's allergies.
- Add the state of the Jungle Cruise, Country Bears, Hall of Presidents, Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain and Carousel of Progress on that trip. Coupled with the fact that with the exception of Splash Mountain, where there are cloned attractions in other MK parks, WDW has the worst version (this was before HM's refurb), and the unique attractions were in such disrepair that they resembled the joke in the Goofy Movie.

Then to top it all, they closed early virtually every night we were at the resort for an upcharge party. We had to argue with a cast member in Adventureland to let us use the restroom because we didn't have arm bands on as we were leaving (but when a 3 year old has to go, they have to go). And because of the number of MVMCP on, the nights they were off, the MK was heaving, and the other nights, the other parks were heaving.

I am not silly enough to think Disney parks have to be 100% perfect, but these were very noticable slides compared to the other mk parks around the globe.

Yes, we did have fun at Epcot, DAK and was very surprised about how much fun our little ones had at DHS. Was it the worst vacation ever? No, I have had worse, and indeed this trip had some very wonderful memories - meeting up with LP friends from around the globe, Meeting Marie Osmond, some nice meals, getting a backstage tour of Star Tours and being able to sit in a simulator by ourselves to watch the film without motion because our son was too short to ride his fav attraction (there never used to be a height restriction in DLP). and you can never beat waking up and seeing zebra and giraffe outside your window.

But it was probably the worst value Disney vacation we have had in the last 10 years (out of 2 California, 2 WDW and 30 DLP trips). and that put a bitter taste in my mouth. It might be dumb luck, but I suspect not.

Then again Mr X came back from his trip telling us we have all been wrong. So it may have been a blip, I trust his judgement in the main.

Lol, one of a few trips where we missed each other by days. To be honest, I think if we had rented a car, we probably would have had a better stay too. We thought that with DAK being an out of the way deluxe, the bus service would be good. When we stayed at Dixie Landings in 2000, we rented a car as we went to KSC, Universal, Sea World, the Everglades and also down to Fort Lauderdale to catch our cruise ship. We used the car and the buses/boat to travel around WDW and thought it was fine (we sometimes drove on site, but not much).

This time we were staying in a deluxe and not planning on leaving the resort due to DME and the dining plan. Disney's plan had worked. We did think about Sea World, but we knew with the age of our kids there was little point in going to Universal Studios, Busch Gardens or KSC. so using the bus seems like a good option right? Especially when so many people talk about how good it is. As I am used to public transport in London, it seemed ok, and it meant I could enjoy a couple of adult refreshments.

well, it was aweful. A couple of times we waited for 35 min for a bus to the MK, and it was packed. When the parks closed, with tired kids, waiting for nearly an hour some nights. The time we had dinner at Whispering Canyon (a high point), it took us 2 hours to get from WL to AKL (I know rookie error).

Finally when we visited the Grand Fla penultimate night, the doorman advised we take a cab back to the hotel as it would be much faster. We said that would be great, but we needed a couple of car seats. He said that was ok, the minivan cabs had car seats. Well for the rest of the vacation we used cabs to and from the parks.

So maybe next time we go, because I am sure we will eventually, we will rent a car. Or even more so, we will probably stay at a Marriott instead.
