A question for you all - when DL reaches a maximum capacity early in the day (such as during the holiday season) and they stop allowing more folks to come throught the gates, how does that work for the people who have already been allowed in as far as park hopping or going to the hotel for a nap and returning later. Can to computer system distinguish from those who were there earlier and let them back in or are do you pretty much stay in the park the whole day in order not lose your place? Thanks!

They have a graduate scale of who they will allow in. Usually, the first thing to go are the people who haven't been in yet, and aren't staying at Disney hotels. Then just people who've already been in are allowed to enter, then nobody's allowed to enter. It works a little differently depending on the day, so my suggestion would be that if it seems like it's getting close to capacity, do what you can to stay in DL.

I believe it is 100k but not sure anymore. I remember for new years eve 2000 the max-capacity was breached by 7,000 people and no matter where you went in the park you could not even see the walkway underneath you. There were a couple of incidents were people and children were feinting because they were overwhelmed by the crowd that night. I think it was the only night to date that I ever heard the CMs working crowd control screaming obscenities at people and being generally rude and violent in trying to get guests to co-operate.

What is the earliest anyone has seen the park close due to capacity? And how long have you seen it stay closed to returning guests before they allow more people in? Does DCA ever close? If it doesnt at least we would have somewhere to go if DL closed while we napped!

The two times I've been at the park when it reached max capacity they wouldn't let a single soul inside, they didn't even let folks get to the gates to scan the tickets to see if they's been in or not, everyone just had to wait in line. They finally only let me in when I said that I had to get my stuff out of the locker and I had to show them my locker receipt with the date. (somehow, the hubby got in immediately after and I still don't know how he managed it. He's a charmer/scammer like no other, that one. lol) That day, I remember being particularly upset because the park was closed due to max capacity when we left and no one told us. If we had known, we would have stayed in the park.

That day it had closed around 5pm, they started letting folks back in right before the fireworks (even though they'd originally said that they were going to wait until right after the fireworks)

The other time I was there that it closed due to max capacity it closed around 2pm and then re-opened around 7 or 8.

There is no hard limit. It entirely depends on how much of the park is open and able to soak up crowds.

The fire marshall has the last say about the decision on whether to close Disneyland or not.

The Resort Duty Manager has the final word on closing the gates due to crowds, not the fire marshall. The decision is made between Operations and Security. The in-Park totals are watched very closely and steps are taken to limit entry when that total starts getting very high. And 100K is not the limit, there have never been 100K Guests inside Disneyland Park all at one time. Ever. On a ridiculously busy day when the Park is closed to all new entries and in some cases even re-entry, the in-Park total will be somwehere in the vicinity of 65K to MAYBE 68K. The overall total for the day would be larger, of course, but once the in-Park total is in that vicinity the decision is made to close the gates to new entries, and as a last resort to all re-entries. I have seen the gates at Disneyland closed due to crowds as early as mid-morning and not re-open again for many hours. This generally happens with New Year's Eve type of crowds. The entry/re-entry policy can change throughout the day based on the in-Park total. If you want to be absolutely guaranteed that you can be inside the Park on New Year's Eve or any other VERY busy day you should arrive early and plan to stay. Re-entry is the last to be restricted but it has happened.

I'm pretty sure they have to follow regulations set by the fire department.

///The Resort Duty Manager has the final word on closing the gates due to crowds, not the fire marshall.///

In practice I believe you(....I think).

But as to The ***final*** or ultimate say that doesn't sound right at all.

A public safety official such as a fire chief holds the final word.

Hypothetically a fire marshal could close up Disneyland if 5 guests were in there if he/she felt there was a safety issue. They have the power to override any recommended capacity in the name of safety.

County and city building inspectors have a smililar power--- they can override building codes(laws)in the name of safety.
