>Driving to DisneyWorld is WAY too National Lampoon for my taste. Why would anyone bother? Flights are cheap and easy, and rentals are a dime a dozen in Florida.<

All very true. But sometimes the drive is part of the vacation. I really love loading up the Rav4 with munchies and Dr. Pepper and all the music I can stuff into my MP3 player and hitting that ribbon of highway! I'll be driving from Dallas out to L.A. for Christmas - can't wait!!!

You're from Mass, Bobbe?

Where exactly? (I'm originally from the South Shore..Braintree/Quincy to be exact but I also lived in Medford, Dedham, and Reading for a short time)

Have a fantastic trip Dan!

(I'm all about Road Trips, and I totally agree on the "half the fun" part...just not all that into driving through the south but that's just me)

Northern Worc. County, but I have a daughter living in Winthrop.
Spirit's more from your former area. Formerly he was.

Driving is not a fun part of the vacation when you have a 1 year old crying because she has to spend 21 hours in a car seat. Down went the gas pedal closer to the floor.

I am with Dan on loving a good road trip. ButI grew up doing the big "Griswald' Summer Vacation every summer. My parents had an Airstream and we drug that thig all over North America. It went to Ft. Wilderness about 6 times. In 1975 we drove from WV to Fairbanks, AK. Now thats a road trip. 1500 miles of dirt road.
As far as flying, first as cheap as airfare is, when your flying a family of 5-6 it gets expensive. We can drive for what it costs to fly one of us. Secondly, It takes me exactly 11 hours to make the drive. From where I live, it takes about the same amount of time to fly. I don't live near a major airport. So I either have to drive 90 mins to Charleston, WV to get a flight to Charlotte, NC then connect on to Orlando. Or I can drive the 3 hours to Charlotte. And then fly. Or I can just keep going, and be there 8 hrs later with my own vehicle.
And as far a dissing the South. There are some very cool places to stop and visit along the way. One of my favorites is Savannah, GA. A great place to stopover. They have some great restaurants.
I agree that the drive back is much worse if you do it like I do the drive down. I do the drive down like I'm on a mission. So I take the drive back easy, splitting it, usually at Savannah, but we have also stopped at Charleston, SC, Myrtle Beach, and Hilton Head. I like Disney's HH Resort much better than Vero Beach. Vero Beach is not near anything. So It is pretty based around chillaxing on the beach. That's OK, but I get bored too easy.

X, I like the idea of the Disney Resorts in non-theme park locations. I love the highly theme Disney environments. And I like vising all kinds of places that aren't Orlando/Anaheim. I don't believe that folks flying to Hawaii for a week are doing so because they are to far removed from a Disney Park to visit seeing as how they either flew over DLR or connected at LAX. A couple of years ago I visited a Great Wolf Lodge and thought the concept was fantastic. A HUGE family friendly hotel with a Spa for the adults. For the kiddies, WOW, a good indoor waterpark, a casino sized arcade, a giant indoor playground, supervised kid clubs, indoor mini-golf, a candy shop, and some have the MagiQuest interavtive game spread out all over the hotel. But the first thing I thought when I went is MAN, this is awesome, but can you imagine what Diney would do with the concept. Then voila, they announced the Hawaiian one. I would like to see several Disney resorts pop up at some of the major family vacation spots. I hear Lake Tahoe is next, cool. But what about somewhere in the east.

<<As far as flying, first as cheap as airfare is, when your flying a family of 5-6 it gets expensive. We can drive for what it costs to fly one of us.>>

And there is the rental car too.

I definitely prefer flying, but even with $200 RTs from Denver to LA (I would not drive Denver to WDW, way too far) that's:

$1000 airfare
$200-300 rental car
$80 airport parking.

It does add up. Last summer the best fares I found for our dates were $300 (plus all the new junk fees). Now we are talking close to $2000 just to get there. So we drove. It was a chore, but we saved over $1000.

Funny what you come up with when you replace an a with a t!

>> am starting to believe folks are smarter in tough times and that may carry over when things get better. What is WDW doing to earn YOUR future business? Are the investing in their parks? Are they giving you new reasons to come? Or are they taking away every single thing that adds value and quality to a visit? <<

It better carry over. The very future of the USA as a great Nation depends on it. Learn from your hard knocks, and do not repeat them.

Back to the original topic. Does anyone in the discusion forum really believe that Disney was doing itself any good by lending it's name to a complex of stores restaurants, and motels that weren't actually Disney?

Someone calling RoadTrip??

;-)

I love road trips. Not sure how I would like one through the south though. The only Disney Park I've driven to from Minnesota was Disneyland. I would do it again whenever I had the time. Iowa and Nebraska are boring, but once you are into Wyoming and then down through Utah the scenery is spectacular. The Mojave Desert is truly spectacular, and racing down into LA from Cajon Pass at 90mph is just about the most fun you can have outside of a Disney Park. The drive was truly as much fun as the visit to Disneyland.

Driving is so much more relaxing than flying. You can take whatever you want, not having to worry about what you can fit into checked luggage. I can have as big a bottle of ANYTHING with me as I want. I don't have to show up two hours ahead of time and then sit in an airport gate area with nothing to see. I don't have to have some danged $8 per hour TSA employee acting like he's a four start general telling me to take off my shoes.

Driving is wonderful. My wife and I take turns driving 3-4 hour shifts so neither of us gets tired. We don't stress about getting on the road early. We eat a nice breakfast and if we are pulling onto the Interstate at 9:30 - 10:00 AM that is just fine. We don't drive real late either. We like getting to our hotel between 6 and 7PM. Then we find a NICE restaurant and have a leisurely dinner, enjoying a few drinks and each others company.

It is a truly civilized way to travel compared to being squashed into an aluminum can with as many other people as they possibly can fit. They you are either starved or forced to pay big $$ for crap you could buy at a gas station for $2.50. Is that any way to travel? It sure as heck isn’t ‘sophisticated’. It is the Wal-Mart form of transit if you ask me. A flying city bus and nothing more.

Besides... every once and awhile you catch sight of a Christie Brinkley... National Lampoon vacations ain't ALL bad, are they Rusty?
