<<I don't know how Flamingo Crossing would have benefited WDW.>>

This is what I think went through their heads:

1) Values demographic is maxed out. Hence the Pop Century unfinished buildings.
2) Lots of people stay in even cheaper places off property, and we can't compete with their prices.
3) If we let 3rd parties build on our property, we can get some of the I Drive crowd to stay on property.
4) We will let the 3rd parties foot the bill to build their facilities.
5) We will charge them rent and royalties.
6) So we will get some of that I Drive money without investing any of our own money or hiring people.

So what happened? Perhaps the 3rd parties can't borrow money to expand, or maybe they believe that its not a good time to expand.

<<That just lowers the quality of the resort in general, and allows an outside vendor to compete with your value resorts. >>

It wouldn't be the first time Disney chose to dilute the brand to make a quick buck.

Is this Flamingo Crossing actually "on property" in the sense that it's inside "the gates"?

If so, me no likey.

This will sound strange, but I actually LIKE the "urban blight" surrounding WDW.

What the heck, X?, you might ask.

Well, for me it just sort of enhances the mystique of DisneyWorld itself, when you're driving past all this junky crap (I enjoy approaching from Kissimmee, actually, to get the full, nasty effect of 8 million motel 6's and waffle houses), and then, everything thins out dramatically..the scenery looks prettier, and off in the Disney distance, you see this place that is just like a completely different world from the one you are leaving. The contrast is just nice, I guess.

So, having said that, if this Flamingo Crossing was supposed to be INSIDE DisneyWorld (in an obvious way), then I don't like it one bit.

If not, couldn't care less.

What the heck, X? Maybe they could move DL into East LA! :-)

It actually doesn't work for DL anyway, since everything is so tightly packed around there (part of the WDW charm for me in leaving the blight is the enormous, wide open spaces of the resort). So I'm very happy they beautified so much of Anaheim around Disney this decade, actually. It's MUCH nicer now, so whatever you think about DCA at least making the place more of a "resort" came with the benefit of cleaning up the surroundings!

>So, having said that, if this Flamingo Crossing was supposed to be INSIDE DisneyWorld (in an obvious way), then I don't like it one bit.<

I just don't understand the idea that this project would somehow devalue everything else on property. Think Downtown Disney, both in Florida and in Anaheim. There are many vendors there that are not Disney companies. But Disney controls the property, controls the look and feel of the property, and thus makes the entire project a Disney property. I think the Flamingo thing would have been the same thing. It's not like everything would have looked like your average interstate hotel exchange. It would have been themed by Disney. And if the people currently staying out on I-Drive changed up and stayed at the Flamingo, there would be more incentive for them to not go off property for a part of their vacation, surely a win for Disney. It's seemed all along that it was a great idea for those folks who can't afford even the value resorts (and trust me, there's plenty of folks out there that fit into that category!) to now stay in a Disney influenced area. As I'm reading things, the only reason this isn't working out is that Disney isn't finding vendors during this economic crunch that are willing to go along. I'd bet that if this is tabled for now, it'll come up again in a year or so, when the economic picture isn't so dark.

If this is true I am VERY happy. I would much rather see a grassy field than more "Disney-fied" International Drive businesses.

I don't know Dan, just how much typical Disney themeing do you think you're going to get from a value motel?
I just want some kind of a buffer zone out there between WDW, and everyday life. Heck, WDW is suppose to be special, that's why I go there.I think WDW is making a big mistake by diluting their product with economy motels. I don't want to come straight from the AK into a strip mall. I just don't believe all that property was bought up in the hopes of someday erecting discount motel's, and malls in WDW.

I agree with MPierce. I don't want strip centers or typical off property stuff brought closer in. When I leave I-4 toward disney everything should be magical and stay that way. I like the illusion that I have entered another world. If I wanted all the discount stuff I would stay off property (which I did twice and it just wasn't the same).
