We will be at DL Friday and Saturday. But we won't fly out until late Sunday afternoon. Any suggestions for something different to do for half a day?

Hollywood - maybe Mel's Diner or the Disney Soda Shoppe

Or the Groves Shopping center is quite lovely and if you have a daughter they have the American Girl Store and Cafe.

The Block of Orange is a short hop, skip and jump away. They have a skateboard park which is free to enter if you just want to observe. There's a movie theater, tons of shops and a big arcade (Dave and Buster's). They have great Philly cheesesteaks!!

An early show at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood. Disney Soda Shoppe afterwards. With a bit of online detective work and a little luck from the scheduling gods, you may be able to make the trip via Metrolink and the Red Line subway. Your stopover will be at historic Union Station in LA. The Red Line's "Hollywood and Highland" stop is at the Kodak Theater, almost literally across the street from the El Capitan.

In the opposite direction, high-end shopping paradise (and some affordable stuff too) is at the humongous South Coast Plaza mall in Costa Mesa.

For a more educational-touristy vibe, Capistrano Mission (with the swallows) is further south in San Juan Capistrano.

Downtown Orange has lots of antiquey shops, although I don't know how happening it will be on Sunday morning.

If you're from an ethnically challenged area, you might find it fun and relatively inexpensive to check out the various cultural-type settlements in the area. Japanese in Costa Mesa (Mitsuwa Marketplace is highly recommended), Mexicans in Santa Ana, Vietnamese in Westminister, Chinese, Koreans and Indians all over the place. Just drive around and look for interesting stores. The live fish department at 99 Ranch Market (those are all over the place, including one on Euclid in Anaheim) is something else. If in an Asian store, go to the candy and cookies section and get yourselves some Pocky. Wash it down with Calpico. Mmm, mmm!

And by all means, if you haven't done so, get an In-n-Out Burger!! Ask for it "animal style."

We do gots beaches too.

If the tide is low, the tidepools at Little Corona del Mar are lots of fun.

If you're flying out of Long Beach, or even LAX, the Queen Mary and/or Long Beach Aquarium would be on your way. If flying out of Orange County, it's the wrong direction (but still not that far).
All times are Pacific Time (US)
