Trek--you aren't the least bit fair. I did not say "the one thing" anywhere. I said "one thing." The meaning couldn't be any different--what you mistakenly claim I meant was that it was the one and only one factor. Unfortunately, I never even suggested that. I have stated clearly (and more than once), that I think it is a factor in what sets Disneyland apart--one among others. (See the language you quoted from me: "I was thinking that *one thing* that sets Disneyland apart . . ." (emphasis added).) I have even identified as one component of the scope of Attractions, etc.

I didn't ask anyone to draw the conclusion you mistakenly accuse me of. I asked for others' thoughts. When some expressed thoughts that are accurately summarized as "MB, you are a dolt--length of time has nothing to do with it, never did, and never will", I asked for further explanation. When that explanation proved to be wholly specious, I reiterated my thought and asked for further clarification.

See, this is called discussion. I proposed a point of discussion, and off we went. But to wholly misrepresent my original point of discussion is not fair in the least.

You are right in one thing, though: someone could say "AA's are the one thing that sets DL apart from the rest." Then posters could talk about it. But I never said anything akin to that. If you or anyone else thinks that the length of time of many of Disneyland's Attractions is an irrelevant factor--so be it--let's talk about why I think it is an important factor and why you think it isn't.

In doing so, there is no need to pick a fight by misstating the things I've written.

Gadzuux does this well--he thinks length of time doesn't matter and explains why. No hostility at all. (Although, I began with a discussion of rides, not all Attractions.)

But, of course, I think having a huge number of longer Attractions *is* a key factor. (Repeating, for clarification, that is "a" key factor.) Imagine the Jungle Cruise experience in 90 seconds. Pirates in 2 minutes? These things couldn't be done. The presence of so many enormous and lengthy Attractions really sets Disneyland in a class of its own. (And ridership at "it's a small world" suggests that many Guests do not consider it to be too long.)

Merry Christmas.

<<< Space Mountain as "most popular": that's a difficult claim, because it certainly isn't the most ridden--numerous Attractions board more guests, including major Attractions on the Westside, the Disneyland Railroad, and others.

The Attraction that has the most consistently long line? Possibly--but at least a dozen others have lines from the moment they open to the moment they close, some without capacity that ramps up and down (Pan and Toad, for example, have consistent capacity throughout the operating day). So you can't use this as a measure, because many Attractions "max out" each day (ignoring natural fluctuations in Cast Member performance).

The most popular per Guest surveys? >>>

Quite an interesting question, as to how to measure "the most popular attraction." I think that each method has its problems. The official Disney survey method certainly has a major problem if it excludes AP holders and anyone under 18 (it may be an effective gauge at measuring attraction popularity among the decision-makers for non-AP tickets).

Ridership count has an obvious inherent flaw in that widely divergent capacities make direct comparisons have little meaning.

Time of day before FastPass issuance runs out would be an interesting measure between FP attractions, but only if each issued the same number of FastPasses per day. It's my understanding that FPs are issued for a certain percentage of hourly ride capacity, and since this percentage may vary between attractions as does hourly capacity, I don't think this measure is anywhere near the best.

Although it also has its flaws, I think that the best measure among those mentioned is the average length of the line (standby line if FP is available). This takes things like hourly capacity out of the equation and variances in capacity over the course of the day out of the equation, as they all get factored into the wait time before the guest makes the decision as to whether or not to wait. That is, when a guest makes a decision to get in the next line, the average wait time for an attraction over the course of a day is a measure of how willing the guest population overall is to wait for that attraction. It takes into account people that can't ride a particular attraction (since they won't get in that line, their demand for that attraction gets measured as 0), and treats all guests that do ride as equal, regardless of their age or type of ticket they buy.

The main flaw I see with the "average wait time" method is that it might under-report the popularity of FastPass attractions, for at least two reasons: 1) people might be less willing to wait in a long standby line for a FP attraction, since they know that they can ride it with minimal wait with a FP (and might actually do so that day), and 2) this especially applies to AP holders, as they don't necessarily have to get a notch in their belt that day for all of their favorite E-tickets, as they can always catch a missed one next time.

I want quality first before length and although the Disneyland list is great DCA is great too. Not rides but still long forms of entertainment which is what I go to the parks for (to be entertained).

Aladdin Show - about 45 minutes
Electrical Parade - about 30 minutes
Animation Academy - 15 minutes
Turtle talk with Crush - 15 minutes

Soarin' - the best ride anywhere of any kind

Toy Story Midway Mania
Tower of Tower
Grizzly River Run
California Screamin'

DCA is a great park no matter how you look at it.
All times are Pacific Time (US)
