This was in the LA Times -
"Disneyland fires Jack Sparrow 4:59 PM, December 8, 2008
Disneyland has forced Captain Jack Sparrow of "Pirates of the Caribbean" fame to walk the plank, saying the irascible scalawag has “set sail for other high-seas adventures.”
Disneyland officials confirmed that the pirate was indeed fired (due to declining relevance and diminishing visitor requests), but flatly denied published reports that the dismissal had anything to do with female fans flashing their breasts at the swashbuckling actors who portray Jack Sparrow at the Anaheim theme park.
Disneyland spokeswoman Suzi Brown called the breast-flashing rumors "absolutely false" and "simply not true.""

I've never gone out of my way to "request" any character, but anytime I saw Jack out and about, he was always swamped with fans.
Oh well. Somebody at Disney's "spinnin' it" for the press/public. |

But I DO find it hard to believe that Jack is irrelevant and that his "popularity" is down. Whenever I saw him the line for him was always jam packed.
Whatever the reason may be, I am still disappointed he is gone =( |

| believe Fri 12/12/2008 9:11a | Talk about double standards. If a female guest flashed Jack Sparrow(or Tarzan, etc) they fire the actors.
If a male flashed Tinkerbell, he would get arrested.
What's the deal with that? |

If they had a face character of Will then...YES |

| SleepingBeauty82 Fri 12/12/2008 3:31p | Declining relevance? Please! If that's a reason for getting rid of things at Disneyland then why do they still have Cruella Deville and Chip and Dale and other older characters walking around? Why is Mr. Toad still operating? How long ago did Nightmare Before Christmas come out and they still do it's overlay evey year? You could even argue that Main Street isn't relavent anymore because it depicts the past. NOT that I would want to get rid of any of these characters or things but come on, that is the most b.s. reason ever. Declining relevance...psh! I spit on that. |

Post #38 presents a logical fallacy: the supposition that if condition A (declining relevance) results in result B (removal of the character) in on instance, it must have the same result in every instance or it is not true.
A can lead to B in the case of Jack Sparrow, but not in other cases, and A and B are just fine. To assume otherwise is unreasonable.
Let me illustrate with an absurd example that is logically equivalent: Assume the Jolly Trolley was closed (B) because it was expensive to operate (A). Assume also that Indiana Jones is expensive to operate (the same A). There is nothing that mandates that Indy also be closed or else Jolly Trolley must have been closed for some other reason.
I'm not a logic instructor, so this is hard to explain in this forum. But I think it is very interesting. This type of argumentation crops up a lot in the Disney discussions.
Also, I cannot pretend to have any idea why the Jack Sparrow character was eliminated from the park. It could very well be declining relevance. If other irrelevant characters are allowed to remain, that doesn't mean that Jack was booted for some other reason. It might suggest a double-standard, but it doesn't suggest, in any way, that that wasn't the reason for his removal. |

LOL, as opposed to a *mascot* character of Will?
Man, I hope I am not in the park the same time Kira, Jack/Will and Hanson are there. :) |
