with the economny i understand the cutbacks, but don't we normally bet similar cutbacks on entertainment during the offseason after the holidays and before spring break and summer?

So then, what is the "Celebrate Today Street Event"? I don't recall having heard anything about this and I do try to keep up.

"with the economny i understand the cutbacks"

With the economy I understand people not visiting Disneyland. I recommend that's just what people do.

So if you're going to pay top dollar to go to Disneyland, just realize what you're getting.

<<< Gadzuux on post #5 is a bit mistaken about the parade history. Parades were seasonal until America on Parade opened in 1975, and then returned in 1976 to seasonal offerings. Daily parades began in the late 80's and even then there has beed periods where no parade has been offered as new ones were being mounted. If no daily parade was good enough for Walt.... >>>

Not terribly relevant. Setting aside the fact that Walt was really into plussing and incorporating new technology as it became available, what's status quo today is different than 30 years ago. During the 70's, motion pictures generally weren't even in stereo sound, let alone 5.1 or higher. Does that mean that a movie soundtrack would be okay today if it was in mono, even if that's how Walt saw and made his movies?

I think this will hurt multi-day visitors the most. Here's my example.

In the past a family could, say, watch the parade on Thursday, see the fireworks on Friday, and catch Fantasmic! on Saturday.

Now there is no variety. No parade and no fireworks means that Fantasmic! is your only nighttime entertainment option. If you're there for 3-4 days, you've just lost some value on your vacation.

Losing fireworks and a parade, even on the weekend, seems like a lot to give up. That's why I say this free birthday ticket scheme isn't really "something for nothing". It's more like a veiled price drop to make up for the cuts that the parks will be seeing in 2009.

How hard will the recession really hit Disney? Lutz had some positive news in his October update.

"While the alarming news coming from the media about the economy in the past few weeks has some industries reeling with suddenly reduced demand, the business at Disneyland has been surprisingly stable and healthy as the busy summer season turns to fall and towards the holidays."

I don't see any doomsday scenarios coming true quite yet.

"Despite a broad ticket price increase in late summer just before the worst of the financial panic hit the markets, attendance at Disneyland and DCA has held up to the long term projections laid out for September and early October. While overall occupancy at Anaheim hotels has eased a bit from its packed to the rafters rates of 2006-07, the Disney owned hotels in particular are still holding their own with healthy occupancy rates above 90% this fall, with advance Christmas reservations even stronger.

Attendance at Disneyland and California Adventure (DCA) has remained healthy, although the planned decrease in attendance post-50th has knocked 5K or 10K off of busy weekends as compared to 2006. Aside from actual ticket sales however, the most important thing is in-park spending at stores and restaurants, and that has remained very healthy. So while there are slightly fewer visitors in Anaheim now, they are so far all still spending at healthy levels."

Disneyland is basically hitting long-term projections that were set, I believe, before the recession was a big deal.

In a good economy you would see drops from 2005-2006 levels of attendance. Things are looking good so far. Are the cuts truly justified?

Any analysis conducted in October is quite stale by now, especially if it was done early in the month. The October-November period of this year was particularly brutal in a great many economic ways.

Interesting observation. It's certainly true that if you're an entertainment fiend, if you see the daytime parade, F!, and the fireworks all in one day, and get to each performance early in order to get a good viewing spot, between that and food, a very large portion of your day is taken up. So it's almost as if you have to have a "rides" day and then a separate "entertainment" day if entertainment isn't offered every day.

It's the lack of variety that irks me. It isn't even about cutting entertainment. I would be happy if they did a parade on Friday, Fantasmic! on Saturday and maybe fireworks on Sunday, or any combination.

But to do Fantasmic! every day seems to hurt multi-day visitors the most.

Also, consider this. The daily parade is a Disney staple by now. I don't believe they put the parade on the list of "rides not operating today". I think a lot of people are going to be asking, "Hey, where's the stinkin' parade?" and feeling ripped off when there isn't one.
