What makes you think those pictures are the full extent of my coverage? :) I'm happy you're enjoying the DisneySea stuff so much. :) I really don't enjoy saying it, but don't expect how the Japanese market reacts to DisneySea to have any real effect on the way the parks are handled in the States. I believe the best we can hope for is that some of DisneySea's technology and concepts will very likely make their way into the existing U.S. parks. It's really OLC's (and likely other Japanese companies') decision making that that will be effected by DisneySea's numbers. Right now, those numbers are looking very good. DisneySea will very easily sell what amounts to over 1 million tickets before it's opening day... Every time I think I've gotten a bead on the level of popularity of the TDR and Disney in Japan, something like this happens and tells me that I still don't fully comprehend it. Marc
22	jonvn Sat 8/18/2001 9:55a	Maybe you should get a film camera, some Kodak Royal Gold 1000 speed film and a fast lens, like a 50mm f1.4. Then scan the negatives in with a film scanner. I have one here that could scan pics in. Actually, I have all that equipment here. If Doobie would send me to Japan, I'll take pictures for him.

In other words, immersively themed environments DO win out over Universal type queue areas and awnings, no? 18 days to go! WOO HOO!!!

Depends. As I've said, things have to be done in a balanced and cost effective manner. If, you have a park that is all rides and no theming, such as Six Flags Magic Mountain, that's not very good. Conversely, if you have a park that is all theming and no rides, that's not very good either. If you attempt to do it all, and cause your expenses to be so high that the park can not possibly ever make money, that's very bad, as your park will not exist for a very long time. This is all I've been saying, and speculating as to whether or not TDS may have done too much theming, and not enough ride development. I based that comment on the low number of rides in the park based on the acerage, and the fact that many of the rides are just the same style "carny" rides found in DCA (which are soundly berated). So, I was postulating that the park may be very large, very ornate, and very lacking in things to do. While doing so, I have been saying all along that the park may be fine, because I haven't been there, the pictures look nice, and that these were just some thoughts. I've been pretty insulted by the level of response I got regarding this, frankly. In any case, there is an even faster film from Fuji that is 1600 speed. Don't know about how grainy it is, though. I also don't know that much about digital cameras, so you may already have the equivalent to what I'm talking about. Although with 1600 speed film and a f1.4 lens, you can take pictures in pretty dark conditions.

When DCA opened, even though it was small and not very impressive to me, I nevertheless recall thinking how its new, shiny surfaces made Disneyland seem just a bit faded, even somewhat like yesterday's news. With DisneySea apparently being a world-class project, the new-park-old-park phenomenon I sensed in Anaheim should be at a fever pitch in Tokyo. It would be great if you'd suggest to anyone there who also reads/writes English and who will be visiting DisneySea (or Tokyo Disneyland too) over the next several months to visit this Laughingplace.com message board. Quite obviously, the boards dealing with the U.S. Disney parks are full of messages, while this one receives far less activity. All this scrutiny of a new Disney park makes me think of something I read not long ago about how the box-office sales of movies has become far more publicized over the past few years, with much more of the public keeping track of which movie is popular, which movie is not. It was noted that even someone like a cab driver, in a casual conversation with his passenger, would talk about such-and-such a movie doing X amount of business at the box office. Here in the L.A. area, local news broadcasts list the top 10 grossing movies on a frequent basis. In some ways DisneySea is like a multi-billion dollar movie I'm interested in tracking, along with the other Disney parks. >> I'm happy you're enjoying the DisneySea stuff so much. << Getting back to the idea of this topic of Disney parks and DisneySea in particular being like a book, I'm turning the pages as fast as I can, anxious to get to the final chapter. I think the fact that the park is selling its quota of 50,000 tickets per day as they are becoming availble for a month ahead REALLY says a LOT!!! I feel like it is April 1983 and the opening of TDL again. Nevertheless, as some of us visit the park over the next few weeks and months we should check back in with our reports of how we found the crowds to be and the impact of exxactly what it means to be in this park with 49,999 other PAYING guests! WOW!!! There's a concept, huh? ; )
