Normally I enjoy and really enjoy some Disney and Disney/ Pixar animated films; although I feel that UP is Disney/ Pixar’s first BIG DUD. I was VERY disappointed in the story and the characters in the film.

Due to the high amount of graphic violence and other types of violence, in my opinion this is not a Walt Disney Company family film. There is actually animated human/ character blood in this Pixar film.

This film is rated PG and in my opinion it should be rated PG-13.

You can not even compare this movie to the quality of the Toy Story films, A Bug’s Life, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo and Ratatouille. This is not your normal Disney/ Pixar film and it is not on my recommended film list.

I understand where you come from, but I have to disagree. I thought that Up was far less violent than The Incredibles, and handled the violence in a much more serious manner. They never look forward to the violence but do it because it is the only option to defeat the villain, who clearly has a few screws loose.

For the blood, I thought it was handled very well. As soon as Carl realized what he did, he was physically sorry and scared of the consequences. He acted through emotion and realized very quickly that he made a mistake. The crowd also acted as though they were afraid, but understood that it was a mistake. I believe that at one point, Mr Incredible wipes some blood off of his lip, so it's not the first Pixar has shown blood.

There are a lot more serious tones in Up than the other movies, and it's not afraid to make you feel uncomfortable. The contrast of the happiness of Carl and Ellie painting the nursery followed by the sadness in the doctor's office is a great way to get the emotion across without going into detail, and letting people come to a conclusion that they're comfortable with.

In a way, it really reminds me of the classic Disney movies. You can't have a happy ending if the entire movie is happy. You need a contrast. Snow White and Pinnochio are very dark and have a lot of scary moments. Up isn't afraid to make you uncomfortable with what the characters have to deal with, but it does make the ending that much more rewarding, because you get the impact of how much the characters believe in it.

From a character standpoint, I think that these are some of Pixar's best. It's hard to place it against the others because it has so many little scenes in it that make up the whole thing, but I think it is easily in Pixar's top 3, if not best one yet. I'm in no way advocating violence, but it just works to make the resolution that much stronger when you see how hard they had to work to get there.

While the PG rating might bug you, and the story and characters not work for you -- you're in a fairly small minority who think 'UP' in a dud.

But rock on, my man.

Rotten Tomatoes currently as 'UP' with a 98% fresh rating.

That's pretty outstanding stuff.

When Prince Philip slays Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty (yes, she's turned herself into a dragon, but you know she's a human type being anyway) there is blood.
I think Maleficent is far more scary than the villain in UP!
The witch/evil Queen in Snow White is pretty darn scary too.

Man...there's going to be limited merchandise released for UP... it's going to be hard as heck to find something with Charles Muntz on it :)

Oh, and the Black Cauldron may have had blood too, I read that it did but can't remember.

I agree with FerretAfros. This was my favorite Pixar movie. I got very attached to the characters. No one in the theater was really amazed that blood was used in a family movie, they were very aware of the fact that Carl made a mistake. Everyone clapped at the end. I loved WALL-E, but this movie beats it. I deeply loved this movie!

giggles at #4 (DyG, LOL!)

Wow, I'm seriously astonished by the implication that this movie was "violent" or has any material which would constitute a PG-13 rating! I am SUPER conservative with what I allow my kids to view (don't even allow some PG movies) and I felt there was NOTHING about it inappropriate for even my 4 year old!

I had the pleasure of seeing "Up" yesterday for a child's birthday party with my 8 yr old son. I too was very quickly wrapped up in the beauty of the sentimentaly of it. In these tough economic times, we are very chosy about which films we see as a [large] family of 7 and I honestly can't WAIT to share it with my family- esp my kids. It's definately a "hug your kid" type movie, LOL. This movie embraces those "little" things in life that really matter and teaches this wonderful moral in the fabric of the story. I walked out of the theater thinking whoever wrote the script actually has a grasp on what really counts in life. One word of advise to those who share the wonderful sentiment the movie offers is to bring KLEENEX. :) Two thumbs Waaay ..."UP"!
