PG sure has changed since back in the day. I watched Woody Allen's Sleeper, rated PG, and I'm sure it would have been rated PG-13 today.

There is also blood in the Lion King. There's a nice blood spray when Simba pops Scar in the face.

The second Indiana Jones was for sure a PG-13, but I think it came out before that rating was created.

I have a silly question: why is showing blood a bad thing? My two-year-old has seen blood live and up close. Why would seeing it in a movie of any kind be bad? What are we protecting our kids from?

Blood is the result of violence. Maybe the problem is that we DON'T show blood more often. Maybe showing the consequences of our actions is a good thing. It's weird that blood is some kind of taboo - a PG-13 movie can show a guy get riddled with bullets, but god forbid he bleeds.

And I guess you could say, "Well just don't be violent." But as stated by others, Disney is at its best when it doesn't condescend to kids. Life is violent. Sometimes there will be blood.

And by the way, 'dud' might be a poor choice of words, given the rave reviews and boffo box office this weekend.

That's what I was wondering, too, Redhead. We're a klutzy brood at my house. We're used to seeing lots of blood. It's only natural afterall. It's flowing in all of us...is that really so awful?

Now, I don't like violence at all but it does have a place, especially in storytelling. I'll have to see the movie, I guess.

Hello, dsjohnson1, and welcome to the LP discussion boards. Please do go over to the Community Board and introduce yourself.

I have taken careful note that UP is not on your recommended film list.

Salutations All,

"UP" was a WONDERFUL movie!

It is a powerful, touching, funny and sad representation of what's truly important in life and how ANYONE can be important and needed.

However Pixar does what they do they need to keep DOING it!

Finally I don't normally cry in movies, but I cried in this one (at the end of the opeing montage and when Carl finally looks through Ellie's book).

Go see this today, it will enrich and change your life!

UP did not receive the PG rating for blood. Films which depict young children under 12 yrs in mortal danger will never get a G rating from MPAA, even animated films.

Some kids will strongly identify with characters on the screen their own age and react anxiously to these situations. The PG rating is a nice heads up to those parents whose kids are sensitive in this regard.

On 6/1/09 President Bill Clinton ordered a government investigation into whether - and how - the entertainment business was marketing violence to children. (In a report released in September 2000, federal regulators said the movie, video game and music industries aggressively marketed to underage youths violent products that carried adult ratings.)

I saw Up tonight. Since it's not clear if this is a spoiler thread, I won't go into details, other than to say I couldn't disagree more with the OP.

The violence is minimal - no more than Lion King or Tarzan, as others have already pointed out. Certainly less than the Incredibles, which would definitely have to qualify as Pixar's first "dud" given its graphic violence as well.

And for those who haven't seen it yet, calling the violence in this film "graphic" is laughable. It's cartoon violence, nothing more. As for the rating, there's plenty wrong with the rating system and I'm the first to criticize it. But I could probably name 100 movies with more violence and intensity than this one that are rated PG, starting with the first 5 Star Wars movies.

Of course, violent content is almost always a terrible way to judge a film. Up is a beautiful movie, both visually and in its storytelling. The characters are believable and great, and there's some hilarious moments.
