Has anyone heard if this film will ever be released? Last I heard disney was in litigation over it. I was hoping someone on the forum had more info. It would be nice to see the movie that goes along with splash mountain.

Won't ever be released in the U.S. It can be ordered on the net. The one I have is pretty fair quality. I actually order it from an ad on LP.

Why won't it be released in the US? Do you know if they still ahve copies available on LP?

The ad was on LP, but you weren't buying from LP. In fact, you were buying illegal bootleg copies. They are available from lots of places. Bet the 'quality' stinks, though.

You might find an old European or Japanese video or a laserdisc somewhere.

It was available for viewing on Youtube not too long ago.

Never say 'never.' It came close to being released a few years ago. Stranger things have happened.

I haven't paid attention since I already have it. And it wasn't LP that was selling the DVD, it was an ad on the sidebar, which are from various other businesses besides LP.

It will never be released because of the depiction of the "happy slave" issue. Some feel that the film portrays slavery in a light hearted way. While others point out that even with the racist spirit of the film at least it was putting people of color to work during the great depression. So you can sometimes find bootleg copies or used copies on Amazon and the like.

I don't think it is a matter of litigation. It is a sensitivity/public relations issue.

As an anthropologist I always found the collection of folktales enlightening and uplifting. It was a part of african american culture. I don't see the sensitivity issues. I see more issues with Pocahantas and yet it is extremely popular. I do see how some of the terms might be a bit condescending but that was the time period and these are actual oral folktales that were collected from the slaves and preserved. That is a good thing.

You and I think that...but there are people in corporate Disney who are "worried" about a "backlash". When I bought my DVD I ordered one for each set of children. Of course I checked with my DD's to make sure it wasn't going to trouble them.

That is a very smart thing you did buying those extra copies. I wish I had been that smart.

I'm in the habit of buying 3 copies of everything Disney...one for each household. This way the grandmonkeys can watch it at home or at 'Grandma's house' when they spend the night.
