Such a short review for this feature. I feel there should have been more discussion of some of the things we saw in this film and how they were ultimately handled by Disney and Pixar.

I totally agree with the A- rating. I loved the film and how it was put together. Missed the rich colors and 3D experience.

I ended up seeing UP at an old theater with a dirty screen/lens, bad lighting and minimal stereo sound. And, I still enjoyed it! I could only imagine what it looks like with all the bells and whistles.

I had a couple questions that maybe someone could help me with...

Sure, they didn't "off" one of the parents or have them long gone by some tragic experience but, here we go again with the poor orphaned child who is all alone in the world. Forget the single parent who is busting her butt to give him a life. Hasn't anyone done research to see that kids of complete families can still be miserable?

Why was there so much content that needed to be explained to children? I had a family sitting behind me and there were so many questions from the little ones. Why couldn't a character fill in the gaps - something as simple as reading the writing on things/props that matter to the film? When the Carl and Ellie story finished - it was presented in just a way that caused several children to ask out loud - "What Happened?" Adults could fill in the blanks but, children need just a bit more.

Why was Carl's trashing of the beautiful falls completely glossed over? Furniture, Broken glass, destroyed TV (that "we" know needs to be handled correctly at drop off points), furniture tossed into a pile, etc. No later mention of a "Wilderness Scout" visit to clean it up for future generations.

Why did they choose (or was it on purpose) to do the "don't touch the mailbox scene" so close to Miracle on 34th Street's climatic scene (ending with the same result)?

Having the bird eat the balloon for comic effect. Yet - so many communities and churches have stopped balloon launches because of all the animals the richly colored latex kills when ingested.

And, why was it okay for the villain and his dogs to shoot, attack and do everything they can to kill but, when one of the hero's create a situation to stop the attack - parachutes to the rescue?

And, what about...

Squirrel!!!!

What was I talking about??? Oh Yea. How much I loved the film.

The opening sequence - perfect.
The dinner scene. So funny and so well done. Loved how they handled the champagne!
The initial launch scene. So beautiful and so detailed.
Introduction of Alpha Dog! Enough said.

Anywho, my friend in New York saw the film and felt that the marketing didn't match up to what they paid for. She and her 7 year old son liked it but, it won't be one for their library.

Can anyone fill me in on why you think Pixar chose the route with some of the above things? I will make sure to see the film again and see if things change with familiarity.

I dunno, I thought some of your criticisms were much ado about nothing.

Birds eating balloons? Furniture dumped on the ground?

No offense meant, but it sounds like a job for the PC police to me. I just can't see that inserting a clean-up crew would make the film better. Might as well send someone to pick up Muntz's body so as not to pollute. Again, no offense, just my opinion, and i'm not a very PC-type person.

Problem with the deadbeat dad scene? It's a common-enough phenomenon that it has a catchy alliterative name, so why can't they show it?

Most Disney kids have only one parent for very specific story reasons. In this case, it was so Carl could fill the gap left by Russell's dad.

It would've worked the same if the guy had died. But if both parents were alive and simply too busy for the kid, then it would've changed the whole dynamic of the story. Carl would have to bring them to their senses somehow for the kid's sake (think Peter Pan or Mary Poppins).

No, the way they did it was just fine by me. It made sense with a minimum exposition.

Dogs with chutes...it's an almost universal movie maxim that you don't kill dogs. Occasionally you do see it, but not all that often. The parachutes were no big, I thought.

The dogs were shooting tranquilizer guns, if that makes you feel any better. Only the lone villain used lethal ammo.

As far as kids understanding the opening sequence, I can't comment on that since I didn't see it with any kids. When mine see it, I'll let you know if they "get" it.

Again, all just MHO, not a personal attack.

Terrific write up, ryanbalas -- really enjoyed reading your comments.

As far as the opening sequence, with Karl and his wife -- which I agree is one of the most beautiful montages I've seen in any movie in a very long time...

Don't you think that kids 'get' what they need to get from that?

Karl and his wife are sad
Karl's wife died
Karl is grumpy

One of the aspects of Pixar movies that I like so much is that they use visuals, not words, to create their movies.
