There is a small chance this weekend of it making over $50 million which would put it on course for over $300 million.
At any rate both Wall-E and Up have reversed the trend of the Pixar movies slowly making less money.
It's hilarious considering how down on Up some of the Wall Street analysts were. The big question remaining though is merchandise. Obviously Up won't be the golden property that Cars was in terms of merch, but I have a feeling it could be at least as good as Monsters Inc. There's a lot of potential in Dug, and Carl could become a good character to use for merchandise geared towards seniors. |

It's also amazing looking at the day-to-day business of UP this past week. It was doing almost 6 times the business of its nearest competitor on weekdays.
This is a movie about an old guy tying balloons to his house. If it goes over $250 million, which it just might, we will know officially and definitively that someone at Pixar made a deal with the devil. |

Most of it seems to focus on the dogs. But Carl should appear on stuff for grown-ups. Especially cranky old grown-ups.

Not this again. This was the exact same rhetoric for WALL*E last year:
http://mb.laughingplace.com/Ms...-P-3.asp
Dlmusic stated: "Based on these early numbers, it seems likely WALL-E is headed for a $250+ million gross and still has potential for over $300 million if this weekend goes very well."
I argued: "If the domestic box office significantly surpasses Ratatouille ($206.5 million) I will be very surprised. The best I can see for WALL*E is around $220 million give or take."
According to Box Office Mojo, WALL*E's final domestic take was $223.8 million.
So many factors come into play here, such as movie competition, the recession, preference for DVD purchase instead of theater attendance, etc. There are plenty of strong and highly anticipated films slated this summer, so I don't expect UP to surpass Rat or WALL*E significantly.
I believe the days of Nemo type numbers are done. Breaking $200 million domestic is now expected of Pixar features, but exceeding $250 million seems far less likely. |

But you're leaving out the factor that's in UP's favor - the novelty of 3-D.
Someone at my work said that they'd see it in the theater because "you can't see 3-D on DVD." Plus the movie makes more in 3-D. I think it could have enough of an effect to push it over $250. Could have. |
