>>I never stated that Pixar was in a decline.<<
I don't believe I said you did. I did say that this was one of the points that came out in the thread.

Here's a list of all ten Pixar films, by year, with their ranking and final box office (by millions).

Toy Story (1995/9) $191.8
A Bug's Life (1998/10) $162.8
Toy Story 2 (1999/5) $245.8
Monsters, Inc. (2001/3) $255.9
Finding Nemo (2003/1) $339.7
The Incredibles (2004/2) $261.4
Cars (2006/6) $244
Ratatouille (2007/8) $206.4
Wall-E (2008/7) $223.8
UP (2009/4) $255 and counting

UP will pass Monsters, Inc today to take the #3 spot, and is a cinch to pass The Incredibles either this weekend or next week to take #2.

>> "June 18, 2010 is when never arrives. That's when Toy Story 3 opens. Mark this down, it will challenge Shrek 2 at 441 million for the biggest animated film ever." <<

I agree and I suspect that "Cars 2" has the potential to be even bigger than TS3. While the raw box-office on "Cars" is kind of mid-range among Pixar's films, the aftermarket on the film has been absolutely enormous, almost certainly the biggest that Pixar has had to date. If the sequel is even remotely up to Pixar's usual standards, it is pretty certain to be huge. If nothing else, it is going to be pretty much a must-see for all the small children that have been collecting the toys and other merchandise for the past several years.

It's funny what happens to you when you have kids.

'Cars' has always been my least favorite Pixar movie. Not that it's terrible, but there's a lot I never liked about it.

My two-year old daughter is obSESSED with this movie right now. And my wife and I now see it in a totally new light now. Still not my favorite, but a wonderful little movie.

But JeffG is right - now that I'm privy to the under-four set, I see the sheer hunger building up for this movie. The tension is insane. When this sequel opens, it's gonna blow big, and I don't think anyone will be truly prepared.

Up stands a very good chance at this point of crossing that elusive $300 million barrier.

Looking at where the films were at this point:

Cars $208 million
Finding Nemo $258 million

Up is at $254 million.

On Tuesday Up made $2.6 million, which is the highest for a Pixar film in it's 33rd day, even higher than Nemo's $2.4 million.

After this point Finding Nemo made $82 million dollars. Cars made $36 million dollars. If we split the difference that would be around $59 million, which added to Up's total would bring it over $300 million.

Of course, right now Up is closer to Nemo than Cars so it makes it even more likely that it can make it across. How it weathers against Ice Age and Potter will determine if it can make it. I personally think it's more likely than not at this point.

Potter is going to be HUGE, but I still think "Up" will cross $300M in its domestic run.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that "Ice Age 3" makes a heckuva lot more money than it deserves. ;-)

Ice Age III is getting panned by most critics, FWIW. Enough so that maybe some parents, responding to Junior's request to see it, might say "Wouldn't you rather see Up again?"

I've also noticed a new ad campaign for Up, the sort that you see after a film is already a big hit and you're encouraging multiple viewings. Rat and Wall-E could have had such late ad pushes, but I don't remember seeing them. It seems to be that Disney itself believes Up will have legs well into the summer, even with the competition.

I'm planning on taking my family to a 3-D showing this weekend. Provided we can still find one after Ice Age opens. I need to see Up again!

I also want to try out the 3D phenomenon before I go see Toy Story and Toy Story 2 this fall in 3-D.

I suspect Up will do very good business (considering how long ago it opened) this long holiday weekend.
