Well it looks like a spoke a little too soon. The theater drop Up suffered really hurt it yesterday. It's going to be quite an uphill climb now. Hopefully it can still make the $300 threshold. If it doesn't, it still doesn't change the fact that it was a huge movie and will probably be at least in the top 5 releases for the year.

The theatre drop was expected and it only drop around 40% yesterday, the key will be how it drops next week after the newness of Ice Age III wears off, I have a feeling that next week Up will stabilize, whether that will be enough for it to get to 300 million remains to be seen.

For those keeping track at home, UP is now Pixar's third highest grossing film at the domestic box office.

And in an effort at some apples-to-apples comparison, UP's opening day clearly trumps that of Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs.

Differences there are. IA:DD opened on Wednesday and UP opened on Friday. IA:DD is up against Transformers 2 (which, after four days of massive box office did fall to number two, though). But IA:DD is a proven franchise, and it opened on more screens.

Here's the stats:
UP opened on 3,766 screens, pulled in $21.5 million to make $5,704 per screen.
IA:DD opened on 4,032 screens, pulled in $13.7 million to make $3,420 per screen. UP went on to a great second day (Saturday), averaging just over $7,000 per screen. If IA:DD's second day figures aren't a dramatic improvement (this is a Thursday before a National Holiday), it will not bode well.

Of course, the other reason I bring this all up is the argument that 3D is a special factor that gives films an automatic advantage over their "flat" rivals. Based on opening day figures, IA:DD in 3D hasn't proven all that remarkable.

Oh, for what it's worth, I would dare say that Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs has been the most heavily promoted film of the Summer. I am really surprised they didn't muster a bigger opening day box office based on that alone. Or maybe (like this family) everybody's tired of it already!

More apples-to-oranges: "Up" just passed "Bolt" for world-wide total box office, despite "Up" only playing in a few countries so far.

Plus, they have the McDonald's Happy Meal promotion too.

You honestly think Ice Age 3 was more heavily promoted than Transformers 2? I don't even really see how it is has been that much more heavily promoted than Up or Star Trek.

The comparisons on opening days for the two films strike me as a particularly apples to oranges comparison. It might be more interesting to compare how the two films do overall on their opening weekends, although Ice Age 3 is certainly opening to much heavier competition.

The apples to apples comparison was based on the fact that both are 3D releases. I did acknowledge that we are dealing with different days of the week, and very different competition. I am eager to see what the weekend results will be.

Thursday figures are in, and the contrast is even more striking. Bear in mind that Thursday is a "Friday" this week (more or less), as many people are off work on Friday. Yet, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs actually declined from Wednesday! Thursday's gross was $11.1 million, a 20% drop at the box office. Per screen also declined, from $3,420 to $2,759.

Contrast to UP, with a second day increase of 23%, for a take of $26.4 million for the day. Granted, this was Saturday, but still, the per screen average of $7,009 is two and a half times greater.

(Oh, and yes, I do believe that IA:DD has been much more heavily promoted than UP or Star Trek. Maybe Transformers 2, as well.)
