The weekend estimates are in. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs appears to be in a dead heat with Transformers for number one at the box office. Transformers has also taken the top spot for this year, but saw a 61% drop off in attendance from its opening weekend.

It is now possible to compare the opening weekends of all three animated 3D films for this summer. UP handily tops them all. Ice Age's three day (Fri-Sat) total is $42.4 million. Monsters vs. Aliens made $59.3 million in the same time period. UP made $68.1 million. Ice Age did open two days earlier, for a five day total of $67.5 million, still behind UP's three day total for the same period.

On Saturday UP also passed The Incredibles to take its place as the second highest grossing Pixar film.

It's official: Ice Age is second for this weekend's box office totals.

And looking at Ice Age, I am really beginning to doubt the whole theory that 3D is such a major factor that it should be considered apart from non-3D films.

Ice Age 3 (I'm going by the numbers to keep this simpler) is the only one in the series that has been released in 3D. Yet, it has pulled in lower box office numbers that 1 AND 2!

Here are the opening weekend numbers (Fri-Sun):
Ice Age 1 (2002): $46.3 million
Ice Age 2 (2006): $68.1 million
Ice Age 3 (2009): $41.5 million

Now, when the FIVE day opening of Ice Age 3 is put into the mix ($66.7 million), you still get a lower total that the THREE day opening of Ice Age 2 three years ago.

So 3D screens, while they do earn more money, don't automatically do that much for the overall box office.

Again, don't take my word for it. Here's what the analysts (the money guys) are now saying about UP:

>>A mea culpa, of a sort, came Wednesday from the Wall Street analyst who was the most prominent (but not the lone) prerelease naysayer about “Up,” the Disney-Pixar movie that over the weekend became the studio’s second-highest grossing film ever in North America, after “Finding Nemo.”

“Dead wrong” is how Richard Greenfield of Pali Research put his related analysis in a research note. “The recent success of Pixar’s ‘Up’ (well ahead of our forecasts) has renewed investor confidence in Disney’s creative capabilities,” he added. “Up” has so far sold $265.9 million in tickets in North America and $35.4 million overseas, where it has only begun to arrive in theaters.

...

Pixar has had an unbroken string of box-office successes since its “Toy Story” revolutionized animated films in 1995, but it has also drawn skepticism from analysts with its risky choices of material. In 2007, there were worries that audiences would not want to see a film about a rat in a kitchen. The next year, concerns were raised about whether audiences would sit still for a film starring two robots that had almost no dialogue for the first half-hour. But both “Ratatouille” and “WALL-E” were not only sizable successes, they each won an Oscar for best animated film.

This time around, analysts cited concerns that the lead character of “Up,” a grouchy old man, would not resonate with young audiences, and worried about the absence of major female characters and the lack of interest from retailers.

Since the film’s release, other analysts have been heaping praise on Disney for allowing its Pixar unit to pursue “Up” despite the film’s commercial risk. “Continued affirmation of the Pixar acquisition as financially and strategically sound,” said Anthony J. DiClemente of Barclays Capital in a research note.<<

"Up" just passed "Shrek" for 5th place on the domestic gross list for animated films:

1. Shrek 2
2. Finding Nemo
3. The Lion King
4. Shrek 3
5. Up

Even allowing for inflation and the (supposed) 3D premium, that's pretty elite company. Doesn't look like there's any chance of it taking 4th place, unfortunately.

I've missed this thread!

From back on June 6:
>>There are plenty of strong and highly anticipated films slated this summer, so I don't expect UP to surpass Rat or WALL*E significantly.

I believe the days of Nemo type numbers are done. Breaking $200 million domestic is now expected of Pixar features, but exceeding $250 million seems far less likely.<<

And how did UP end up at the box office?

On a reported production budget of $175 million...
Domestic total: $292,810,074
Worldwide total: $506,768, 708
Ranking among Pixar releases: 2 (Ratatouille is at 8, Wall-E is at 7)

Next up: the home video release!

I want to know where the 175 million comes from. They're not paying big actor salaries. They don't have to worry about location shoots. I know the computers that are used are expensive and there's always a big marketing budget for these films but 175 million???

Fine. I'm eating crow. You win. Feel better now?

UP did better than I thought it would and passed $250 million. Hooray for E-Ville.

But... you have to acknowledge that 3-D premiums at the box helped in this regard. None of the previous Pixar films were released initially with 3-D viewings at higher prices.

Almost half of the theatres were showing UP in 3-D, which were always more expensive than the average ticket price of $7.18. Without 3-D, UP's domestic box would have been lower than $260 mil.

This will teach me to take all factors into consideration before popping off and making wild a** predictions. I forgot that UP was going to be the first Pixar film released in 3-D, and should have realized that the box would be higher, as a result.

Now... since I'm willing to admit I was wrong... who else is going to step up and help themselves to my plate of crow since UP did not pass the $300 million mark domestically, even with the help of 3-D pricing? 8^)

As for DAR's comment... you obviously don't know how E-Ville works. I do. And I'm constantly amazed that the final production totals aren't actually higher. Pixar isn't necessarily inefficient, but... there's waaaaaay too much overtime in the eleventh hour to meet deadlines, on every film. At least, on every film so far. Things might actually start turning around with TS3 and Brave. That would be great, because I never see my friends during the final six months of production.
