Haven't you heard man, they are Robots in disguise.

Robots in disguise!

Sort of like Michael Bay's directing ability.

RealD Achieves 100% Growth WorldWide
June 21, 2009

http://www.consumerelectronics...d=780913

From the above article:

"A driving force in this year's elevated box office totals, RealD 3D consistently delivers three to four times per screen revenue of the same film on 2D screens, with blockbusters including DreamWorks Animation's Monsters vs. Aliens and Disney'Pixar's Up having earned over $100 million on 3D screens. There are over 40 films slated for release on RealD 3D from all major studios, and more announced regularly, assuring the exponential growth of the RealD 3D platform."

I started a separate thread asking about the difference in the box with the added premium for 3-D, but no one has posted the information yet.

What percentage of the theaters showing UP are 3-D?

What is the average increase in ticket prices for 3-D vs 2D?

Good for Disney and Pixar that UP is raking in the dough. (I don't want to see my friends in unemployment lines.) But I'm a nerd and a geek and I love to spin my beanie propeller very very fast. I love numbers and stats and all that stuff. I'd really like a fair comparison of domestic box office performance with Rat and WALL*E. And that means stripping out the 3-D ticket premium. With 3-D earning "three to four times per screen revenue of the same film on 2D screens," that is a significant difference not to be ignored.

All things being equal... what would the box office total be today if UP was shown in the same number of theaters but only in 2D at 2D ticket prices?

>>The real question is, why the heck is Transformers a juggernaut!?<<

Good question. You couldn't pay me to go see this film. It just looks awful...absolutely awful.

Shame it'll pass Up as the highest grossing film of the year, but money isn't everything.

>>I'd really like a fair comparison of domestic box office performance with Rat and WALL*E. And that means stripping out the 3-D ticket premium.<<

Nah.

The choice to release the film in 3D is as much a creative decision as any made for Wall-E and Ratatouille. 3D also adds to the production costs, so it again is just another production factor. That it has added benefit to the box office return is an interesting matter for speculation, and nothing more.

While the 3D manufacturers are making breathless public relations claims about their influence on the box office, it still comes down to the film itself to sell the tickets. Case in point is Monsters vs. Aliens. Same reported production budget ($175 million). Made with 3D in mind. An animated romp. So it is a valid comparison.

At day 31 UP is at $250 million. At day 31, Monsters vs. ALiens was at $174.8 million. UP passed $200 million on day 21 of its run, more than MvA's total domestic box office of $195.9 million. Up is now over $250 million, and still going strong.

So while it is certainly interesting to consider the impact of 3D on the box office returns, it is still the case that it is not the deciding factor that its proponents would want it to be.

But you cannot compare apples to oranges regarding the Pixar films, which is what you've been doing.

Compared to the last three Pixar films, after adjusting for the 3-D ticket premiums, UP is doing somewhat better than WALL*E and Rat, but not much better than Cars:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/s...ixar.htm

RealD is currently boasting over 3200 installations worldwide for their 3-D systems (soon to reach 8700). Most of their installations are currently in the US, so it's a safe bet that a minimum of half of those RealD theaters -- 1600 screens -- have been showing UP in 3-D for the past four weeks. (That will change in two days with Ice Age 3.)

With an average of 3800 screens showing UP, and at least 1600 of those screens showing UP in 3-D at a 30% ticket price increase, then a minimum of 12% of the box office would be from the higher ticket price, if attendance were equal between 3-D and 2D theaters. Given the popularity of the film and that this is Pixar's first 3-D film, I wouldn't be surprised if the actual percentage of the total box for the 3-D premium was greater than 15%, even approaching 20%.

So... if 12% of the total box came from the 3-D ticket premium, then UP's current total of $250 million would actually be $220 million if shown only in 2D. If the percentage were 15% of the total, $250 million would be $212 million, and at 20% of the total for the 3-D premium, $250 million would be $200 million.

Realistically, I think the actual number for UP's current box adjusted for the 3-D ticket increase lies somewhere between $200 million and $215 million. So go ahead and tell the studios how insignificant the 3-D aspect is to distributing their films. I'm sure they would disagree.

Getting back to comparing UP to the last three Pixar films...

Four weeks after initial release, WALL*E was at $195 mil, Rat at $180 mil, and Cars at $206 mil. UP has clearly done better than Rat and WALL*E and slightly better than Cars when adjusting the totals for the 3-D premium. So raving about $250 mil at the box when ignoring the fact that the previous Pixar films did not have the added bonus of 30% higher ticket prices for about 40% of the theaters is disingenuous.

And as far as UP "still going strong"...

Let's wait and see how much of UP's revenue drops after this Wednesday (July 1), when Ice Age 3 takes over the 3-D screens. If 12% to 15% of UP's box is comprised of the 3-D premium, then losing those 3-D screens will cut its take significantly.

This coming weekend, I suspect that "Up" will lose the vast majority of its 3D screens to "Ice Age 3". It will be interesting to see how big the drop-off is, comparatively. Of course, that film probably also represents the most direct competition since "Up" was released, so it will be hard to tell what can be attributed to loss of the 3D screens versus the increased competition.
