Just wanted to let everyone know that I know the difference between "affect" and effect". It should have been "...seems to have a definite *E*ffect on Oscar night." I promise I know that! :)

<<I just think that the buzz being generated by Up and the good will towards Pixar may carry it through.>>

But three Oscars in a row to the same studio? Especially with other strong contenders in the field, such as Coraline and the upcoming Burton produced '9' in September, not to mention the US theatrical release of what many call the best film Miyazaki has ever done? It would be a miracle for Pixar to pull off three in a row.

To be blunt... Pixar has won four of the eight Best Animated Feature Film awards since its inception in 2001. Miyazaki, whom most of the Pixar directors wish they could match talent-wise, has won only one of those eight Oscars. And many anime critics believe Ponyo is a much stronger film than Spirited Away. It's going to be tough for the Academy members to justify yet another Oscar to Pixar with a film like Ponyo in the field.

It may or may not be fair, but awards are rarely given without prejudice or bias, especially the Oscars.

I certainly agree with this!

Obviously, you don't love Treasure Planet as much as *anyone* because I would call it Oscar-worthy.

It is a magnificent film, better than Lilo & Stitch IMHO.

Okay, I guess it's true that I don't like it as much as you do, then. I really do like it, though. Particularly Emma Thompson's character, who, as one of the most interesting, strong female characters ever featured by Disney, steals the show for me.

The studios can (and will likely more often now) promote a movie in more than one category it is eligible in, i.e. foreign language and documentary as well as animated.

As far as the acting categories, a studio can promote an actor or actress as either lead or supporting, but it is really up to the Academy members to vote for the performer in the category they deem appropriate. A perfect example of this is this year, when Kate Winslet was campaigned for as a supporting actress in "The Reader" yet was nominated in the lead category (and won). The rules are that category they place higher in is the one they are nominated in.
