Hello Laughing Place Folks,

I am going to Tokyo mid-October with a group of 8 for one week and I would like to see, among many things, Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea.

Here's where I need some help.

Given the October crowds, how long does it take to do both parks? Are they both full day parks? I definitely want to dedicate at least one full day to Tokyo DisneySea.

However, with Tokyo Disneyland, are there enough differences from Disneyland Anaheim to justify another day at TDL? I know they have the Monsters Inc and Pooh attractions that I want to visit. But for someone who goes to DL often, is there much to see at TDL?

Also, if anyone can help recommend some hotels around the area that are good (quality wise and budget wise), that would be great.

Thank you very much in advance!

I can't speak about the crowds or hotel lodgings near the area (I stayed at the Shinagawa Prince during my visit and it's about 30 to 40 minutes away) but as someone who frequently wanders DL, Tokyo Disneyland was amazing.

I've never been to Disney World so I don't know if it makes a difference but the sheer size of TDL compared to DL is awesome. Pooh's Hunny Hunt was my main reason for going in so people watching, looking at the different merchandise and seeing the differences on the rides was just icing on the cake.

I would go back just to buy cookies from there.

What do you usually do while at Disneyland here? Oh, I think the Halloween event will be going on while you're there. It might be interesting to see the Japanese perception of Halloween.

I usually go for a 4 day pass and still don't usually get a chance to do everything. But I don't live near a Disneyland. So I would recomend one full day at Tokyo Disneyland and a further two for DisneySea. There is plenty at TDL that is unique to Disneyland, and its certainly still worth a day trip to see, maybe two? Pooh and Monsters Inc alone are worth a day out here. But you have to take into account the Halloween entertainment and Dreamlights, plus some of the other ride attractions like Splash Mountain, which are greatly improved.

If we're talking one week as in seven full days, I would recommend devoting NOT MORE THAN 3 to TDR. I think 2 would be fine, since you're very familiar with Disneyland anyway.

Perhaps a "play it by ear" approach? Go to Disneyland the first day, and DisneySea the second, and then decide if you want to spend yet another day in the parks?

If you go this route, then the thing to do would be to buy a 2-day ticket, specifying one park for each day. If by the end of the second day you want a third day, you can upgrade your ticket to a 3-day ticket by paying the price difference, and the third day will be a park-hopper day just as if you bought a 3-day ticket up front. But you have to do the ticket upgrade from inside the park and before the park closes on the 2nd day.

I agree with Mr. X - no more than three days at TDR based on what you said. You won't be able to see absolutely everything, but the same can be said about a 10-day visit to WDW, and I wouldn't recommend a longer stay there just because of that.

I would recommend a split hotel situation: stay at the resort for your Disney time, and stay in town for your Tokyo time. You're traveling with a group of 8, but don't say the ages or how many rooms you'll need. You should be aware that some hotels in Japan have 3 and even 4 beds, such that a room could sleep 4 adults with everyone having their own bed. The Sheraton at TDR is like this.

Wow, I didn't know that!

You learn something new every day. Great advice, SD.

////group of 8////

///But for someone who goes to DL often///

These two statements reveal so much.....

If I were alone I would dedicate 3 days (1 day at Disland and 2 at Sea)

If I were going with seven others in a crowded time like Oct. I would dedicate 7 days(2.5 days at Disland and 4.5 days at Sea).
Now, you obviously don't have that kind of time so is there any way that you could divide into groups of 4 so you can see and do way more than if you remained a party of 8?

As a party of 8 you will not see much at all. Expect chaos and frustration at almost every turn unless the party is a well oiled and organized machine where the members share similar interests and understand theme park touring.

In summation I would allot a 2 to 1 ratio of time(more or less) in favor of Disney Sea.

///with Tokyo Disneyland, are there enough differences from Disneyland Anaheim to justify another day at TDL?///

When you say 'another' are you saying that you will automatically schedule 1 day at TDL and that you are thinking about adding 1 more?

You will find TDL to be noticeably different than Dl Anaheim since you know Dl Anaheim very well---- too many subtleties(and a few not so subtle differences like the canopy over Main St., Pooh + Monsters attractions and the world famous or should I say infamous "open gate madness") to count. Now if you were a terribly casual Dl Anaheim visitor then I doubt that you would pick up the differences so readily.

I grew up in California, going to DL once a year as a kid. As an adult, I probably made it there once every 1-2 years or so.

Before I became a TDR fanboy in 2003, I had visited TDL as a day trip several times when I was otherwise in Tokyo. I would go in the morning, hit the major E-tickets, and then be done by mid-afternoon or early evening. It was fun, and I'd get a flavor of the differences, but I didn't see the need to stay until closing or see every last thing.

It's of course different now with DisneySea and other things at the resort, but even just TDL is now a multi-day experience for me. I can't emphasize it enough: be sure to take in the live entertainment options including all of the parades and any special castle forecourt stage shows going on, even if you're not normally a "parade" person at DL. Since you'll be going during Halloween time, you'll have 3 different parades plus probably a castle show. Those items alone will consume several hours of your time, so by the time you add eating, attractions, and so on, you'll be hard pressed to fit everything you want to do in a day even if you're there 8am-10pm. I think that a 3-day ticket might be the best for you and your planning: one day at each of the parks, and then on the third day you can park hop and catch anything you missed.
