DH and I think the chicken dinner at the Plaza Inn is the best! But also wondering what others think about how it compares to Knott's Chicken Dinners? We've never had it and we were thinking about stop at the Knott's resturant on our way back home. Is is worth a stop to eat at the restaurant or just stick with the wonderful chicken at the Plaza Inn? Thanks

I have not been to Mrs. Knotts chicken resturant in a few years but I heard that it is still very good/the best even thought the Plaza's chicken is very good also. We plan on eating the Knotts chicken dinner this time when we visit.

I thought I would actually offer my humble opinion (instead of just lurking past) on this one being born and raised in the deep south, therefore, having eaten fried chicken (and about everything else one can fry) my whole life thus far.

Being a self proclaimed connoisseur of fried chicken specifically, on a recent trip to across this great nation, from Georgia to Cali, I took my family to DL instead of WDW. We hit Knott's as much for the park as for finally getting to try this world famous fried chicken.

IT IS VERY GOOD. HOWEVER...

It is far from OUTRAGEOUSLY GREAT. Unless the park and or the restaurant hold some big nostalgic value for you, or unless you simply want to be able to say, "Yeah I've eaten that chicken," I would have to say that if you don't go, you won't cause your ancestors to roll over in their graves. It's good, it's hot, it's cheap, but it is far from "Knock your socks off" chicken.

The best fried chicken I have ever had would be at the "Lodge" (hotel) in Williamsburg, Virginia. The second best is easily the 50's Prime Time Cafe at WDW in the Disney Studios. And a close third was last March at an open air cafe (there was no sign or name) on the side of the road, between Cairo and Giza, Egypt. (They fry almost everything over there.)

I believe that a lot of the taste of the chicken begins with having good quality chicken at the very start, before you do anything to it. It is very difficult to make sub par chicken taste really good, but easy to make quality chicken, taste great. The quality of chicken at Knott's is a very good quality. Still, I wouldn't go there and waste half a day, just for the chicken.

But if you are going to the park anyway, like we did, then by all means, it would be a shame to miss out in that case.

I say all of this in my humble, two cents worth, opinion, best taken with a grain of salt. I am quite sure there are many here who would rate Knott's at the top of their list. I rank it around 12 or so.

I have eaten Mrs. Knott's fried chicken since I was very little. My grandparents would take us for the dinner, because it reminded my grandfather of the chicken his sister made at her chicken stand in the forties. We used to leave Disneyland for the chicken dinner at Knott's, and it was really worth it!

They stopped going in the early nineties, because my grandfather said the quality of the chicken had dropped substantially.

I have eaten at the Mrs. Knott's restaurant in the last year. While it is ok, it is not up to what it used to be. Even the world famous pie did not live up to anything of its former glory.

The plaza chicken dinner is not the best fried chicken in the world, but it is decent food for Disneyland, and the price is one of the more reasonable in the park.

I've been going to Knott's since I was three years old (let's see, is that twenty six years?) and eaten at the the chicken place every time - up until about five years ago. The chicken was VERY greasy on a particular visit, but I figured it was a one time thing. Next time I went it was VERY greasy again, so I stopped going out of my way to go there. I've been once since, as it was convinient (I was staying for business at a hotel a block away). It was better, but by no means as good as it used to be, nor as good as the Plaza Inn.

I still go for the pie, and I'll go anytime I'm near for the breakfast, but not the chicken dinner. Too bad. I think it used to be about the best around, and even better than the Plaza Inn.

The Dlands have eaten both, and fairly recently. (Yes, we do get over to Knotts from time to time. But don't tell anyone.)

They are really very different experiences, in my opinion. Chicken at the Plaza Inn is not traditionally fried. It is also served as a plated meal with a standard set of sides. I really like the PI chicken dinner.

Knotts is a classic fried chicken, although it does suffer from a "mass food" vibe. No offense for those who love Mrs. Knotts, but the lady is no longer sitting at a desk by the kitchen door checking every plate before it goes out to the dining room. (At least, I hope not.) Knotts does offer a greater variety of sides. And there is something so, so retro about ordering that bowl of rhubarb. The pie is simply a horror-- thick, inedible crust with a sugary filling that isn't quite boysenberry OR apple.

The price of each isn't cheap, either. And Knotts definitely loses in the ambience department.

But we still stop off for those delicious butterflied breasts at Mrs. Knotts every now and then. And I don't even like white meat!
