Considering the amount of Pixar on the list I'm surprised not to see Finding Nemo on the list.

I have seen about two thirds of the list (The Iron Giant looks at me reproachfully from my DVD shelf still unwatched since Christmas)!!!

Nice to see South Park made the list, because although highly controversial. It is still an awesome movie.

u k fan, you know that The Iron Giant was written and directed by Brad Bird, the same guy that did The Incredibles? It's really a very well done and enjoyable movie. Take it off the shelf and shove it into your dvd player NOW!!!

Interesting. Anybody know what they based this list on? Reader polling? Expert opinion? Pulled it out of their caboose?

In my non-conformist opinion, Up, South Park, Waltz With Bashir and Triplets are overrated and should be nowhere near this list, and I don't think Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Chicken Run or Coraline quite rate a top 20 ranking, although I heartily endorse all four as being well worth seeing. I'll trade you Wallace and Grommit Curse of the Were-Rabbit for Chicken Run.

And, uh, Snow White? Little Mermaid? Finding Nemo? Hel-loooo??

And where in the heck is Grave of the Fireflies? And My Neighbor Totoro? I'll gladly kick Kiki off the island if we can get Totoro in there.

Anywhee, I didn't start throwing things at the pooter when I read this list, so as these lists go, I guess this one's pretty good.

Since, by my quick count, 15 of these were made since 1990 (and two more were in the 80s), you'd have to make a pretty strong argument that we're in a "golden age" of animation to justify such a lop-sided showing of more recent animation. Not that the argument can't be made, but otherwise, I'm hard-pressed not to see this as a pretty superficial, unconsidered list that relies more on recent memory than on a careful consideration of animation through the ages.

Are we prepared to say Pinocchio, Dumbo, and Bambi are the ONLY animated movies prior to 1985 that are worthy of inclusion in the top 20 greatest animated movies of all-time?

>>you'd have to make a pretty strong argument that we're in a "golden age" of animation to justify such a lop-sided showing of more recent animation.<<

(1) I think the list IS a pretty strong argument.

(2) Prior to the 70s, Disney WAS animated features. Nobody else had anything remotely competitive. Any list ranking animated features will be slanted toward the last couple decades, because that's where all the animated features are. There weren't many before the 70s, and the 70s and 80s features were, for the most part, not all that good.

(3) While Disney's golden-age *animation* may be the pinnacle of the art form, if you're going to judge the movies as movies overall, things like Cinderella, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp etc. are weaker than most of the flicks on that list. I might have been partial toward including Lady and the Tramp myself, but I can't make much of an argument as to why it belongs there more than, say, Persepolis does.

Lemme ask you this. Which pre-1985 features, other than Snowy and Fantasia, would you like to see on the list that aren't already there? Some non-Disney suggestions:

Gulliver's Travels
Mr. Bug Goes to Town
The Emperor and the Nightingale
Hansel and Gretel
Animal Farm
Mr. Wonderbird
The Snow Queen
Mr. Magoo's 1001 Arabian Nights
Alakazam the Great
Gay Purr-ee
Hey There It's Yogi Bear
Yellow Submarine
Mad Monster Party
A Boy Named Charlie Brown
Charlotte's Web
Heavy Traffic
Wizards
Coonskin
Raggedy Ann and Andy
Allegro Non Troppo
The Mouse and his Child
Watership Down
Lord of the Rings
Son of the White Mare
I Go Pogo
Heavy Metal
Secret of NIMH
The Last Unicorn
Twice Upon a Time
The Plague Dogs
Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer

See what I mean? Slim pickin's.
