Hi everyone. We are strongly considering booking ourselves on one of the Alaskan Cruises. The thing is, we have never been on a Disney cruise, or any cruise for that matter, before.
We have spoken to a travel agent at Mouse Ears about pricing and it looks like the fancy rooms with verandahs are just outside our budget.
Has any on traveled in an inside cabin before ? I know we won't have the fabulous view obviously, but I don't think we will be spending that much time in the room as it sounds like there is lots to do around the ship.
Do you think it is still worth doing with the basic room ? What else can you tell us about cruising with Disney ? We will be traveling with friends, and both families will be 2 adults with a 2 year old.
Any tips or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much
-Meg

Mickeymeg, sorry I don't have the answers for you, but I have the same questions. We are very interested in the Disney Alaska cruise. One difference is our kids are older - teenagers now. I don't know if we will go if we can't get a view room, but I don't know what the other rooms are like.

I haven't done a Disney cruise or an Alaska cruise before, but I have been on a 4-night cruise, as well as a couple overnight ferries that were basically one-night cruises. For my family, it was not a big deal to have an inside room at all, since we were busy the entire time. On the longer cruise, we got a room with a window, but on a lower level, so it wasn't a particularly spectacular window or anything. It was nice to have some natural light in the room, but I'm not sure if it was worth the price difference. On the single night cruises, we had inside rooms, and it really didn't make a difference at all.

In general, we're a pretty active family on vacation. We don't go to a destination to just sit on the beach. We'll go out on a boat, go to a museum, go see a performance, but don't stay in the hotel room. If you also tend to do a lot of stuff on vacation, then it probably won't matter. But if you like to lounge around, then you might want a little more space. We're one of those families that leaves for the theme parks early in the morning, and stays until closing, so we don't really need anything fancy. From what I've seen, Disney has outstanding events going on onboard the ships, so it won't be a problem if you want to get out and do something. But if you tend to spend a lot of time just hanging out and relaxing, it might better suit you to stay in a room with a balcony.

And I would totally recommend takign teens on a cruise, since I was around that age (maybe a little younger, but my brother was a little other than me, so it evens out) when I first went on a cruise. It gives the kids the freedom to go explore on their own (there are lots of teen-only events and locations on the ships), but paren't don't have to be too concerned, since they are stuck on the ship and can't get into too much trouble. It's a great way to have a family vacation, and still get a little seperation from each other and just take a break from everyday life.

Thanks Ferret, that was what I was hoping to hear. We typically are very active on vacation and only use a hotel room for sleeping in at night, so not fancy is fine by us.
Any other thoughts out there ?

Does anyone know if it would be worth an extra couple hundred dollars to be on the first cruise to Alaska ? Are they likely to do anything special during the first one ?
All times are Pacific Time (US)
