<But Ross' greatest challenge will be to address Disney's creative dearth. Although Disney isn't the only studio to have suffered a bad year at the box office, the division lost $12 million in its most recent quarter -- its first loss in four years. A number of its recent movies, including the Adam Sandler family comedy "Bedtime Stories," the costly 3-D guinea pig saga "G-Force," and the latest installment in the 1970s "Witch Mountain" SciFi adventure franchise " Race to Witch Mountain," failed to attract wide audiences.>

Ya think?

<And like all studio heads, Ross will find himself grappling with a number of sea changes in the business caused by a slump in DVD sales -- the most lucrative part of a film's revenue stream -- and technological shifts that have changed how, when and where people watch movies.>

Here's how weird it is.

You pay to see a movie in the theater when it's released -- $10.00

Or, you can wait, and buy it on DVD for $19.99

Or, you can wait a few months and buy it on DVD for $10.00

I was in Wal-Mart today, and they have displays of DVDs -- $7.50

Then, they have giant bins of DVDs -- must be hundreds of them -- $5.00

Then, if you want to watch a movie on Pay-per-View on your TV -- $4.99

But if you want to schlep over to the grocery store and use RedBox, it's $1.00

I was pretty shocked when I heard this, but it makes sense. Rich Ross is a very smart guy who produces the kind of entertainment that connects with people, and he knows how to spread it to the widest possible audience.

Honestly, it seems like everything he's responsible for turns to gold; I can't think of the last major failure under his management. Critics will probably moan that the studios will only produce insipid tween fare now, but I think he knows better than that.

A surprising choice, but a good one I think.

"Honestly, it seems like everything he's responsible for turns to gold;"

Because tween girls and thier mothers will buy ANYTHING they are told, IE: Twilight.

This was widely expected in the industry and while some may be impressed, this Spirit isn't one of them.

Ross is all about insipid teen franchises, which have made loads of money for Disney, but he has never been in a position of such responsibility and stature. And one wonders exactly what qualifies him to move from tween-centric Disney Channel (where he got results, no doubt) to leading a huge and fabled studio that now also includes Pixar ... and what's left of Miramax and Touchstone (after Iger got done with them) and also distributing for Dreamworks and integrating Marvel into the fold.

Indeed, many folks in Burbank will tell you quietly that Ross is very good at taking credit for the work of others (something he was well known for while working for Viacom's Nickelodeon) ... of course, that is the Hollywood Way.

I hope this works out, but I sure don't see it.

Hmmmm, too soon to make a judgement call here, but I am really nervous. I hate the Disney Channel now, and this is likely to be proof that it is time for me to move on.

I was kind of hoping that Lasseter or Spielberg would take the helm, but alas, that does not seem to be.

And yep, there is little point going to the movies anymore. The environment is not that pleasant, and the experience is not that special. So we wait for movies to come out on DVD or Satellite.

Count me as one who doesn't see what the fuss is about. What's the difference between the product that Disney produces and that of any other studio in Hollywood? It's not like Disney's films are, or ever have been, superior to other studios. Seems to me they are all concerned with the next big franchise or sticking with a pre-set formula. Most of what comes out of Hollywood is stale, and it's been that way for decades.
