Thanks for the advice, I never thought of the JTB before but I will check them out around March / early April next year too see if an upgrade is possible.

I had a suspicion that blocks of rooms were booked out for travel companies - I guess it makes sense but perhaps not the most efficient system.

Thanks for the hotel advice too. I've just had a look at the Tokyo Excel and it does seem like a great place. The cost is a little higher than the one we had in mind and I *think* the Century Southern Tower is right next to the station so hopefully won't have a long walk back and fourth. With these in mind I think our primary choice is the CST but will certainly keep the Excel in mind.

Thanks again

Quick word on the Century, I believe you are correct and it's right at Shinjuku station. It's certainly got location and view all wrapped up nicely.

Just a slight word of caution though, despite the striking exterior of the place, I'm pretty sure it's one of the less luxurious hotels in the area. I'm sure it will be clean and pleasant, but just so you know the room might be pretty small and amenities rather scarce (that's basically what separates the good from the great in Japan, since there are no issues of safety of cleanliness to speak of).

I'd stay there myself, don't get me wrong. Just don't expect it to be the Hyatt or anything (you gots to pay the big bucks for that kind of a hotel anyway, better to spend the cash on luxurious food and souvies :p).

Thanks for the advice. We've looked up a few reviews etc and all seems to be good but I'll check it (and others) out again keeping your advice in mind!

Thanks

Phil
