Not sure if anyone created this topic and I just missed it? Anyway, saw the film last night and absolutely LOVED it.

I've heard it's more of an adult film than a kids film. But I want to see it.

My 11 year old loved it.

I was laughing so hard I had tears just in the very first minute of the film. The kid who plays Max is fantastic.

(Max was my nickname as a kid. I made mischief of one kind and another.)

While I liked it I can't really reccomend the film to anybody.
Too emotionally complex and slow for children/families
Too god drat depressing for adults.

I didn't think it was depressing at all! I smiled the entire way home.

I didn't think it was too complex, either. In fact, it seemed the opposite to me. It seemed more on a kid's level than an adult's. The other kids in the theater didn't seem to think it was too slow or complex, either. They were pretty quiet...except for the howling near the end.

The only thing I did think was that there was a couple of parts where younger kids, or more sensitive kids, would be scared, but that is so like life. I think we coddle kids too much when it comes to these things. Kids have incredibly complex emotions and most entertainment is dumbed down for no reason.

Kids are always surrounded by big people/monsters who are having giant, complex emotions that maybe the children don't quite understand but are being torn apart by them anyway. That's the whole point. Max's family is being torn apart and he thinks he can control everything by being the person in charge but he still can't.

I think kids understand that more than adults, actually.

Because I'm so used to James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano it's going to be a little weird hearing his voice.

as one of the Wild Things

Btw I look forward to one day when confused parents or grandparents accidentally rent Wild Things for the kids.
