I say, you are wrong.

THANKS to Keith Olbermann, and to him alone the powers-that-be have made a new law barring the discrimination of an entire class of sick people from health care rejection just because a few of those in the class are "too expensive".

Olbermann first highlighted this sickening abuse in his "worst persons in the world" segment, and subsequently New York State Senator Eric Scheinerman co-sponsored "Ian's Law", barring the health care companies from pulling such repulsive crap on the most vulnerable among us.

Now let the right wingers show us which noise machine element has actually highlighted a societal problem and done anything to change it.

I dare you.

<<O'Reilly-Jessica's Law>>

Jessica's Law may have identified a "societal problem" but it does little to "change it" in any meaningful way, such as Ian's Law in NY.

Prop 83 in CA (nicknamed Jessica's Law) is a big fat expensive mess for this state's taxpayers that has not been proven to stop recidivism or keep our children any safer. It places unnecessary burdens on non-violent registered sex offenders, such as adults who had consensual sex as teens with their minor girlfriends, who are not a threat to the public at large. Prop 83 does not differentiate between these "sex offenders" and true pedophiles. And the GPS monitoring is expensive to implement and maintain, and it has done virtually nothing to stop predators from recommitting.

Perhaps O'Reilly was the one who brought public attention to the horrible crime that Jessica Lunsford endured, which helped to craft state laws across the country like Prop 83 in CA. But what Olbermann did has far more reaching impact for individuals' daily lives and the ability to even stay alive than predatory protection laws such as Prop 83 will ever have.

Before Jessica Lunsford, we had Megan's Law in the nineties, which again attempts to address a societal problem but doesn't quite work as well as it should. I personally know someone who was arrested in a national forest by a ranger on horseback for indecent exposure when he was doing the sponge bath thing before continuing his hike in the backwoods. No one but his friends were around for miles, yet he's now a registered sex offender because the ranger saw him naked. Unbelievable, but this idiocy does happen. Neither Jessica's Law nor Megan's Law is effective at stopping these crimes, and makes life a living hell for individuals who are forced to register as sex offenders who aren't the folks we're all concerned about.

As for whether Bill O'Reilly was the sole media celebrity who originally coined the phrase or was the first to bring national attention to the situation, I doubt it. John Walsh on America's Most Wanted was also a vocal proponent for sex offender laws such as Prop 83 at the same time O'Reilly was pushing for the same.

But the one thing you can credit O'Reilly for, is the hateful rhetoric he spewed for years on his Fox News show, against Dr. George Tiller, constantly referring to him as "Tiller the Baby Killer" over and over and over again.

To the rabid anti-arbortionists in our country, O'Reilly did identify what they believe to be a "societal problem" and did his part to "change it." I personally would rather have Keith Olbermann working on our behalf than Bill O'Reilly.

I appreciate what Olbermann does, and I'm glad he's out there fighting his fight. I've got some problems though.

He's a bit pompous and full of his own self-importance. Everything is dialed up a notch too high for me - when he tries to be ironic he overplays it, when he thinks he's being wacky, he's not, he lapses into righteous indignation so often it becomes a parody.

Those of us 'middle age' folks may remember Tom Snyder from the 70s and maybe 80s. Another NBC blowhard with a lot of hair and teeth and shiny suits and a booming voice that would laugh at all of his own jokes. Keith reminds me of Tom in a lot of ways.

You won't get any argument from me. I remember Snyder. Very loud dude. "This one goes to eleven." 8^)

That being said... I'd still rather have Olbermann to O'Reilly, any day.
