I was able to talk with Kathy Mangum, producer of Carsland, at the D23 Parks and Resorts Pavilion today. I asked her what the plan was for the back of the mountain range that faces Paradise Pier. She said it will be fully finished out with detailed rock.
They have left it open as they finish all the work on Radiator Springs Racers. When they are close to being done, work will shift to the back, facing the Pier. They have already started placing infrastructure to support the scaffolding.
The open trusses facing Katella and Harbor will be closed with a metal screen material, and painted to represent rockwork.

Well, we can finally stop guessing what will become of the backs of Carsland.
Maybe I'll finally get a good nights sleep tonight.
Doug, I can't thank you enough. ;)

I am confident they are going to let Mother Nature do her part as well, with a little assist from the landscaping department!

I'm glad to hear that they are planning on addressing this. I'm not sure I understand the reasoning to wait so long (it doesn't seem like the need access to the 'inside' of the mountains, so I don't see why they couldn't do all the work at once), but I'll be happy to see it happen. Hopefully they can do something to disguise the parade barn over there too. If they work it all into a hill/cliff, it could really help add some reality to that area of the pier.

Do I get bonus points for breaking this news over this past winter? It helps to be a part of the construction industry. Sometimes you learn things that are just interesting enough to make a mental note during a meeting. : )

Interesting to note this small touch of doing the "backside" of the rockwork facing Katella - on EE at DAK they left the whole backside (which is visible from the road leading into the park albeit from a distance) as a squared-off buildiing and not adorned with rockwork making the ride look like a mountain from all angles.
I guees in California we expect "Disneyesque" touches everywhere - they sculpted faux rockwork on the buttrusses used to support the cuttings they made into the hills next to the expanded lanes on the 91 freeway between Orange and Riverside counties as opposed to leaving them as stark concrete. Not sure how much that extra feature cost but did seem a bit unnecessary during this time of educational cutbacks and such at the state level.

Thanks Doug for asking the questions to the right person. It is good to know the plan... and to know it is not planned to be a painted flat wall at least for the Pier view.

Easy. This is still a civil discussion board. :>)
