We are thinking of taking our 5 yr old son to Lego Land during our next trip to DL. We've have never been and have NO idea what to expect. Can anyone give me any helpful hints and what to do and see to help make our trip magical for our little guy? We were also just going to drive down from DL for the day and spend the entire day at LL. Thanks

5 is a great age. Be prepared to wait and play. Ll is not like DL, it is much smaller, with less capacity, but the attractions are fun.

Be sure to explore miniland and take the boat through miniland too. If he likes thrills, then the dragon coaster is a must (lego dark ride at the beginning). Also laser raiders/tomb blaster is a fun buzz meets lego Indiana Jones type dark ride. The fireman stunt show is fun for kids that age, and driving school (he will have to do the mini version) is a highlight for most kids.

Build and test (near Einstein) is where to head if you want to build things.

And there are loads of other things to try. Check out the map online. For the adults, be sure to try the robocoaster (near the castle).

For food, there are a couple of good counter service options, but for a special snack, try the Apple fries! have fun.

One thing I would strongly suggest is to try and get there at opening and head immediately to the Driving School ride at the back of the park (head to the left from the main gate). It is free-run (not on a track) driving attraction that is likely to be a huge hit with a child that age (it is still my almost 8-year-old's favorite). If you get there right at opening, he should be able to ride it several times in a row without a significant wait.

Note that they wisely have two versions of the ride, one for kids 3-5 and a larger version for ages 6-13. That makes the ride very safe and manageable for younger kids.

After you finish there, keep heading on around to the Boating School ride, which also should still be a fairly short wait. A parent would need to ride with your son, but he still should be able to steer. This one is also a free-floating ride that isn't on a track.

If your son is willing to do the Dragon coaster, you might want to make that your next destination. It actually often gets busy very quickly at park opening as it is often a first destination for many, but the lines generally ease a bit after an hour or so.

You definitely want to allow at least an hour or so for exploring Miniland as there is a lot to see with a ton of detail. It is usually a good choice for later in the day when the rides are the most crowded.

You should probably be prepared to spend a bit more time spent sitting and waiting for your son than you experience at Disney parks. A number of the rides are kid-only and there are also several play areas that are a lot of fun for young kids. In some ways, you might actually find it a bit of a break in the midst of a multi-day DLR visit.

One other thing to note is that the food generally isn't that great at Legoland. It isn't awful, but it isn't anything to get excited about either. We've generally found that the best choices are either the BBQ restaurant in the Castle Hill area or the Ocean Journey Cafe at the Sea Life Aquarium (you don't have to buy aquarium admission to eat at the restaurant). Both generally seem to have somewhat fresher and better quality food than other locations. Note that Legoland usually closes around 6pm, so you can plan to get dinner somewhere outside the park. We often end up at the TGI Friday's restaurant that is just one exit south on I-5.

A 5-year-old is apt to have a wonderful time at Legoland, so I definitely think it is worth the side trip. To be honest, my son has really somewhat preferred it to Disneyland for the last few years.

Agreed Jeff, both my 6 year old and 8 year old prefer Legoland to all the Disney parks (they have been to 8 Disney parks and 3 legolands around the globe and they always tell me they prefer LL)

Thank you both for the very helpful information. I have given our son a LL map to look at and your helpful hints will definately help us plan our day.

(I really hope our son does NOT end up preferring LL over DL. I think that would break my heart :) He's been going to DL since he was 3 month old and has been a PAP since he turned 3)

Well, my kids have been going to Disneyland Paris since they were 3 months old and held the DLP versions of the PAP since they were 3, as well as having been to WDW and DL, as well as having been to 22 other theme parks, and Ll is my 8 year old's fav, Europa Park/Efteling is my 6 year old's fav, and Disney is lower down the list for them. Kids will make their own decision.
