When I was watching "People & Places Disneyland U.S.A." last night there is a scene like you are riding the Jungle Cruise. Very clearly you can see the skipper with a mustache...how is this possible???????
The film was made in I believe 1956...and its my understanding that previous to 2000 mustaches were not allowed...How did this mustached skipper sneak through??? |

Obviously facial hair has nothing to do with the effectiveness of a CM, and some of the best looking men out there have them. I still think the tradition of the clean shaven face for men, limited make-up for women, limited jewelry across the board, etc. is what set Disneyland apart. I know that some might consider that clean-shaven look outdated and old-fashioned now, and many will not agree with my feeling about facial hair at the park. IMO though, Disneyland is unique in so many ways, and this was just one of those areas that made it a stand out. I go to the park now, and I don't really see any rhyme or reason to the facial hair either. I had read somewhere that it was going to be monitored. From what I've seen in just the last few weeks though is everything from full beard, to scruffy, to peach fuzz, to shadow, to goatees....you name it. I even find myself wondering if it has become "the thing to do" for some of those male CMs. I wonder how many of them really like it, and how many of them are just doing it because they can. I know change is what it is, and maybe I will get used to it, but being a former Attractions CM for 10+ years at the park though, I'm not sure I ever will. Disneyland was just so unique in its appearance guidelines. Guidelines I gladly stuck by for over a decade because I knew that's what Disneyland was. Seeing beards and facial hair of every sort now will be something that I just don't dig. |

| EmmaJayne Sat 3/10/2012 11:51p | ^^ I don't mind a neatly maintained bit of facial hair on seem men, bit on many it can look scruffy.. My other half is in the police force and they are currently allowed to sport a short beard or moustache as long as it it well groomed and neat. It must be an established moustache etc so they are not allowed to turn up to work with 'bum fluff' or 2 days worth of regrowth. I would have assumes Disney would have put similar policies in place.. It's like McDonalds here, the staff used to be very well presented but now I see sleeve tattoos, piercings, unruly hair, make up pancaked onto faces, visible bra straps and so on, I know in theory none of these should affect the service they provide but that's seemingly gone down hill too. I hope that doesn't happen at DL but it sounds like they do need someone checking up on the facial hair situation! |

After that it was no longer allowed except for those CM's who were "grandfathered" in by having a mustache prior...but if they ever shaved it off, they were not allowed to regrow it. |

ORGOCH: --So just how long did ya plan ta drag this thing out, tramp? Er does ya got a death wish fer makin' a dang fool outta yerself in front a ev'rybody that comes ta this here site????
ORDDU: You have a bit of a mustache, yourself, don't you little sister? Come closer so I can see just how much uglier it makes you look...
