Disaster Transport, Cedar Point's indoor bobsled coaster that closed in late July, is being replaced by GateKeeper, the largest wing coaster in the world (for now). The new ride is also replacing the park's iconic Space Spiral observation tower.

I know that Jim in Merced CA might be dissapointed in the news about Disaster Transport (which is already half torn down). However, the new coaster looks a lot more exciting than Disaster Transport was, especially the last several years when effects were basically removed and theming was minimal, at best on a mediocre bobsled coaster.

Ha! Good memory brotherdave. It's true, I was part of the pre-show movies for Disaster Transport when it was first turned into an indoor ride. (around 1990 or so)

It was cheesy, but kinda fun too.

I have that footage on Beta decks somewhere in my garage -- should probably get them put on DVDs soon huh?

If I do, I'll load it on to YouTube and share it with y'all.

It looks AMAZING! CP has done it again. The Keyhole head choppers are insane.

I will definitely be trying to make it up there in the next couple of years.

It will transform the front of the park and provide another signature look in a park full of signature looks. The Corkscrew over the midway, the lakeside run of Magnum, the stature of MF and the obscene height of Dragster.

I think this will be an epic hit on the scale of Raptor's introduction.

Looks very cool.

By the time I rode Disaster Transport, there weren't even making a pretense at "effects." And they weren't air-conditioning the ride building (except the queue) so the lift hill was freakin' HOT. When you started to move, at least you got the breeze.`

Please do, Jim!!! I'd love to see those videos again. You'd have to point out which pilot was you! :)

Ill see if I can get that done. I was the last pilot of the three or four shown - my character crash lands into what appears to be the middle of The Amazon.

Fun times :)

Noteworthy for our west coast fans...rumor has it the Cedar Point's gain with GateKeeper was Knott's loss. It is my understanding that Knott's was due to get a hyper this year but that Ouimet pulled the plug. To satisfy the contrat they moved ahead more quickly with GateKeeper at the Point.

Now, obviously the removal of Perilous Plunge means that something is likely in the works out there but maybe a year later than originally planned.

That thing would never fit were Perilous Plunge is now.

I didn't like Desaster Transport that much, but it was an interesting ride. However the new replacement looks great.
