Hi Ragtime Gal.

I had breakfast with John just recently, in fact. He was in Los Angeles for his lecture on Mary Blair.

You may wish to look into a wonderful monograph John authored back in 1994 for an exhibit on Tytla at the Katonah Museum of Art. It shows up on eBay once in a while, and some used book sellers carry it on occasion.

Vladimir Tytla - Master Animator. Catalogue essay for exhibition at The Katonah Museum of Art, Katonah, N.Y. Sept. 25, 1994-Jan.1, 1995. Guest Curator: John Canemaker

Also, a similar article appeared in the fall issue of Animation Journal in 1994 titled "Vladimir Tytla -- Master Animator"

Both are excellent.

Thanks for the kind words.

Hey Rhett, just wondering when we can enjoy the next installment of Great Animated Performances? Vladimir Tytla was a great animator. The Nine Old Men get a lot of credit and rightfully so, but I would love to see a book on Freddie Moore, though I'm sure the end maybe to depressing.

Hello! :)

Thank you very much, ActingforAnimators (or Rhett if you prefer?). Best believe I will be keeping my eyes peeled!

While, we're on the subject, how much do you think one of these might run for? I try not to spend more than $90 for coffeetables (though, exceptions can be made) & I'd like to keep my kidney as well as all other marketable organ tissue that still has a place in my body. :)

I feel the same way. There isn't a thing I can think of that Moore hasn't drawn that doesn't feel me with delight just to look at it. My eyes look for points of origin, but those points of origin are never found. At least two of the mentors that I can think of had some issues with alcohol, which is definately something worth mourning for.

Well, I know what I'm asking Santa for! ;)

I too think the credit the 9 Old men get is very much deserved and I realize that not everyone who deserves credit will get it in this lifetime, but it would really do me something good to see a book out there that offered more richly detailed information on the mentors who worked with the 9 Old men. Especially, now in light of the fact that (correct me if what I heard is wrong) the studio has decided to go CG. I wonder how many of those methods invented so long ago would still be used if at all. I feel as though traditional animation is becomming something of a lost art. If the face of animation improves because of it, then bless it! But, I still harbour an interest in the old ways, even if they are no longer useful. :)
