| cheezman20 Wed 9/3/2003 1:30a | Bridge on the River Kwai - I continued my David Lean adventure and rented Bridge on the River Kwai... I have come to the conclusion that David Lean IS the greatest filmmaker ever... the story was great and was nothing like i thought it would be. not too long after that i watched Spaceballs and realized that it was basically a parody of all of David Lean's films which is funny because of the Alec Guinness connection (Mel Brooks can layer so many in-jokes on top of each other that you will never see the same movie twice!). Alec Guiness was phenomenal in this movie. I will definitely own this one... and that whistling song is still stuck in my head!
Narc - Yay for Joe Carnahan... five minutes into this movie I was on the edge of my seat and sweating! He's from Sacramento and worked at a local T.V. station not too far from where I live. When he made his first movie Blood Guts Bullets and Octane I had the pleasure of going to a special screening and staying afterwards to hear him and the cast talk about how they got into Sundance and won awards with the film. Very cool guy and a role model for me. Sacramento is producing a lot of talent and hopefully i will be next!
Videodrome - I'm still in this David Cronenberg kick. Good movie, and though it's dated the message is even more pertinent to our times and the obsession with "real people really getting hurt". Yet another good soundtrack from Howard Shore, and James Woods and Deborah Harry are in it... love it love it love it.
24 hour party people - true story of the rise and fall of Joy Division (New Order) from the point of view of their manager... verrrry post-modernist (those with short attention spans will do fine) and great music (new wave, punk, a bit of techno)... well done, interesting, funny, and wierd... good insights... if you like any or all of these topics and can handle flashy cuts and graphics than check it out. |

Leslie Caron (old Hollywood), Kate Hudson (new Hollywood), and some fresh, new faces. Merchant/Ivory productions.
What I admired about this movie was that the characters talked the way people talk in real life------the dialogue seemed natural.
The scenes of Paris made me want to return to Europe.....soon. :)
SWIMMING POOL. Another one set in France. A sexy mysterious, thriller with a surprise ending. Compelling performances.
THE MAGDALENE SISTERS. The true story of a harsh, Catholic convent in Ireland that served as a reformatory for "troubled" girls in the early 1960's. A grim portrait of religion without love.
Truly touching and heartbreaking performances. This is the kind of film that leaves its audience sitting silently, staring at the screen as the end credits roll.
One of the BEST FILMS I've seen this year. Highly recommended.

Loved these movies as a kid. Now my kid & I were watching together, wishing we could do those things.
