| Labuda Thu 6/29/2006 3:04p | Cross Bones by Kathy Reichs. She's the doctor/scientist that the tv show Bones is based on, and bonus - the lead character in this novel is Dr. Temperance Brennan! :) |

| VegasPixie Thu 6/29/2006 10:16p | Just finished American Massacre: The Tragedy at Mountain Meadows, September 1857 by Sally Denton. Getting ready to read Juanita Brook's book on the same subject. I'd never heard of this event until a colleague mentioned it. Since it occurred relatively close to where I live, I became interested. Denton's study is fascinating, although seems a bit biased. |

| VegasPixie Fri 6/30/2006 7:05a | The massacre, which earily occurred on September 11, 1957,involved a wagon train from Arkansas consisting of over 120 people who were murdered at Mountain Meadows near Cedar City, Utah. Controversy surrounds this event no matter who tells the story; however, the general consensus is that the massacre was perpetuated by Mormons, although the motive is completely unclear. The controversy is whether or not this act was ordered by Brigham Young and/or other higher-ups in the LDS church. Whatever the case, all but 17 children under the age of 7 were murdered, and the bodies left unburied in this meadow for nearly 2 years.
It's tragic, complicated, and this short description doesn't really do it justice. But the idea of a religiously-based act of terrorism, the largest on American soil until 9/11, occurring ON 9/11/1857, is fascinating to me.
Sorry, it's a bit heavy for a Disney Fansite, huh? :) |
