When Imagineers were originally designing the Magic Kingdom, Pirates was intentionally omitted in favor of a similar water attraction, Western River Expedition. They felt that due to Florida's close proximity to the real Caribbean, visitors would not be interested in the attraction. After numerous guest inquiries about when Pirates would come to Florida, they decided to add the popular attraction.
