| Westsider Thu 2/10/2005 12:09a | Wow! Four years later and here we all are keeping this amazing thread going.
I'm proud to say that I've read every single post on here over the years, and a lot of them are almost priceless now. Of course I had no idea what I was starting that one February night four years ago when I came home from work laughing to myself about the jokes CM's were just starting to make about DCA, but I'm glad it turned into the marathon it has.
It really is kind of a neat window back in time. It's almost hard to remember now, but for over a year Paul Pressler, Cynthia Harriss, Paul Yeargin, and every TDA dweller worth their pantsuit and mocha simply insisted that DCA was going to be a "GIANT SUCCESS AND HUGELY POPULAR". When I think back on all the training we had, and all of the things our managers used to tell us in the months and weeks leading up to DCA's opening, it just makes me laugh. I remember well the panicky pleadings from management to "Remember to be extra nice to the Guests! When DCA opens it's going to have to close the turnstiles every weekend by Noon, and thousands of people will have to settle for a day at Disneyland instead and they're going to be grumpy right from the start! We have to be extra nice to them so they won't mind waiting for a future date when they can get in to DCA." Honest to God, that was the accepted Conventional Wisdom back in January, 2001.
And so you can imagine the gasps of stunned silence when DCA opened and..... no one showed up. That first weekend was sunny and crisp, and no one came to DCA. Disneyland was it's usual busy self, but DCA was barren and completely devoid of Guests. And within 36 hours of that shocking news, the Jungle Cruise skippers started using DCA=Edsel jokes in their spiels, and the new theme park began it's quick slide into embarassed failure for 2001.
A great deal has changed at DCA. Stuff was ripped out faster than you can say "Wolfgang Puck Is Hip And Edgy", and new stuff was slapped together even faster than you can say "We Haven't Dismantled The Electrical Parade Floats Yet Have We?". But this thread remains to remind us of the shock and amazement we all had when the general public turned out to be just as smart as all of us Disney geeks were and stayed away from DCA's mediocrity in droves in '01.
Thanks for keeping the dream alive LP'ers! Here's to DCA and one heck of a thread! |
