| DlandJB Wed 9/13/2006 12:11p | Can I dip a toe in here? I have avoided this thread because I've been so unhappy with myself. I lost more than 80 lbs back in 2003-2004, but slowly more than 50 of it has come back on. That will teach me to be so arrogant about backsliding. It can happen to anyone.
So three weeks ago I decided to give Jenny Craig a call. I needed something with structure and where I didn't have to think too much about it at the beginning at least. The first two weeks were wonderful -- I lost 10 lbs and started excersing again. This week has been a little bit more of a struggle because we have been out to eat more and I wasn't good about portion control. I haven't been on the scale yet (I go tonight) but I'm not really discouraged, because I was losing too fast anyway. They like it to be a slower and more steady loss, rather than a rapid one.
I'm loving the Jenny Craig food, although it is expensive. Doug has been great about working with me, so that whatever I am going to have for dinner, he fixes something similar for himself and the kids. That way the kids are not so envious of what I'm having and we are learning to create dishes together so that as they gradually move from their food to our own, I'll have a better grasp of the foods and portion sizes, etc...
I'm glad to find a place like this thread now to chat about how it is going and how hard it can be. But I have all those size 10/12's in the garage and I'm determined to get back into them sometime!

| alexbook Wed 9/13/2006 12:16p | I haven't weighed myself in ages. I don't even own a scale. I just track myself by how I look and how well my clothes fit.
So, my question for the group is: Does tracking your weight help or hurt your progress? How often do you weigh yourself? Do you weigh yourself publicly like at Jenny Craig or whatever, or privately at home? |

| DlandJB Wed 9/13/2006 1:00p | They tell me not to weigh myself -- at least no more than once a week. I do weigh in at Jenny Craig. It is usually 3 lbs more than I weigh at home in the morning (I go in the evening) but usually it shows a net loss anyway. I'll let you know how it goes this evening!

| 999HAUNTS Wed 9/13/2006 1:55p | Welcome DlandJB!! Good to have you aboard.
Alex, I weigh myself every morning at 5:30am, except for on weekends. And no, you are not supposed to weigh yourself everyday, and you really should judge by how your clothes are fitting, but I use the scale as an "attaboy!".
I have a scale that calculates the difference between weigh-ins so I feel great when the little arrow points down! |

| ETicket34 Wed 9/13/2006 2:03p | Wow, what a coincidence. I was looking for this thread to see if anyone had ever tried Jenny Craig and what they thought about it. I have done Weight Watchers before, but feel as if I need to have complete structure and essentially be told what to eat.
I see on their website they have multiple levels of membership. Dland, which do you use and what do you think about it? |

| DlandJB Wed 9/13/2006 10:39p | I'm doing the Jenny Rewards program and going to the local center for consultation and weigh in. Again, it helps me stay focused to have to be accountable every week. And because I have a substantial amount of weight to lose, I will get to the 35% off of food level during my program -- and once you get there you don't go back up as long as you stay in the program. It was expensive to start but after a year you only need to pay $49 per year, plus food. The food runs about $100 a week, but it will get cheaper as we go. It gives me incentive to stay with it too.

| a goofy guy Thu 9/14/2006 1:51a | I'm working at losing weight also! I've started eating organic foods, it's hard because they cost more and when eating out nothing is organic, but I feel better and am beginning to lose some lbs. |

| fkurucz Thu 9/14/2006 1:53p | ^^Bear in mind that the only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you consume (eat).
Organic foods may be healthier overall, but I don't see how they contribute to weight loss, unless you eat less because they cost more :-) |

| fkurucz Thu 9/14/2006 1:56p | And don't forget to exercise!
And it doesn't have to be some killer regime in a gym. Take the dog for a 45 minute brisk walk. It might not sound like much, but it beats sitting on the couch watching TV. |

| LacyBelle Thu 9/14/2006 2:35p | Yep. Great advice, fkurucz.
DH & I aren't in any sort of organized program. We are just tracking calories -- eat less, move more.
DH found a software online that sync's to our Palm Pilots where we input all the food we take in and the exercise we do. You build in a goal and the program calculates your calorie budget for each day. It's been relatively easy and effective. It just takes discipline and portion control. That's the hard part in any diet.
We also weigh ourselves each day, 999HAUNTS. While it is not what you are suppose to do, it serves as a great motivator so I continue to do it.
Welcome to the thread, DlandJB. Keep up the good work, everyone! |
