>>I've found the toughest, most discouraging thing is gaining the weight back<< I am afraid that if I did the math I would find that I have lost around fifty pounds in these 10 months. But I am only down 10 pounds from where I started. I cannot say how many times I have gained 4-5 lost it; gained some back. And maintenance is always a bear.
Welcome knightnfrees:o) Here's to better health for all of us.
Hi LacyBelle! It is good to "see" you.

davewasbaloo, just a thought for you and feel free to think "mind your own business amazedncal2." :) Have you considered Weight Watchers online? Since you have access to a computer and are eating out alot it might be something to look into. It's not hard to get into the swing of WW, you don't need to buy their products and you'll get plenty of ideas for eating away from home. I think several of us on this thread are following WW or a modification of it. |

| davewasbaloo Thu 2/1/2007 5:08p | Thanks for the thoughts amazedncal2. Sadly, WW does not work for me. When I was a child, I was a skinny runt. Then, one day I broke my leg in 32 places and my arm, ending up in a wheelchair. I became morbidly obese and was put on weight watchers at the age of 10. The bright side was I lost weight, the down side is all those good habits are actually still with me when at home.
A few years ago, I tried WW again and Sarah joined me. She kind of tried it, and I stuck to it religiously. I gained 2lbs while Sarah lost 20 in the same timeframe. Not good! The worst thing was no one good really advise on living in restaurants in the UK. As it is, right now I had Shrimp Chow Mein last night thinking it was a good option (one guide said on average it equals about 700 cal) - however I found another guide tonight that thought it was 2100 cal). My god it's hard. When working 19 hour days, and it's freezing temps outside, a salad is very unappealing.
I have also been on meds to stop my body absorbing fat (didn't work)- gave me the runs, but it didn't work.
The only time my weight has been down is when I was a poor starving student, and I had 20 mins to walk between lectures at campuses up a steep hill - distance 1.5 miles. I became slightly overweight instead of obese back then.
I am sure it is lack of exercise that is a problem. But between the long hours, travel and having a young family, I find it hard to find time. It's too nasty outside and gyms are hard to come by when one travels around. Depressing. |

Why on Earth did you do that?? :-P Seriously though, what happened?
<The bright side was I lost weight, the down side is all those good habits are actually still with me when at home.>
I'm a bit confused by what exactly the "down side" is in this sentence. Wouldn't "good habits at home" be a good thing? |

When half pipe skating took off in the early 80's I couldn't handle a board, but I was great on roller skates. The prospect of a 14 foot ramp looked like fun, and it was for a while - until I fell on my leg snapping and crushing it!

Yes and no. It is good that I eat well. But the fact I am so fat, it makes it hard to cut things out when you already use skimmed milk, margerine instead of butter, spray for pans etc. |

| alexbook Thu 2/1/2007 5:35p | Haven't weighed myself lately, but I think I'm up lately. I've been feeling pretty down, and I've been doing a lot of "comfort eating". Right now, I'm just trying to get the courage up to weigh myself tomorrow morning. :-( |

| Liberty Belle Thu 2/1/2007 10:09p | Over a month into my New Year's resolution to lose 15 kilos (33 pounds) I think it's time I got onto this thread for some accountability, not to mention motivation!!
My plan this time is "slow and steady" weight loss. I have lost significant weight in a short time before (22lbs in 6 weeks, etc) but it always comes back on and I lose motivation because I've cut out so many of the foods I like - I can't get back into a strict 'diet'. So this time around I'm going to allow myself a certain number of "bad" foods, like chocolate and hot chips, a week and stick to that limit ... I'm aiming for weight loss of about .5 of a kilo a week (just over a pound) and I'm not going to try to get my weight down TOO low - I think that's another problem point for me, I aim to get down to a lower weight than I really should for my body type (and my appalling genes) and the weight comes screaming back on the minute I dare to eat something that's not entirely healthy. 15 kilos down would take me to a pretty healthy weight, so I'm not going to aim for more than that (or should that be less than that? Hmmm).
Anyway, I've only lost about a kilo in the month since I've started, so it's time to give myself a kick in the butt, I think and I figured this might be just the place to do it. My biggest problem is I've been doing hardly any exercise, but it's so hard to get up the motivation! I HATE the gym and just won't go. I know I should, but I just won't and I'm not going to buy a membership I won't use. My body seems to respond well to swimming and walking, though so I've been trying a bit of that. I've also been using weights to tone my arms a bit, and they're working pretty well so far!
I'm sorry this is so long, but thought I might as well explain where I'm coming from from the beginning :) |

| sarahwithbaloo Fri 2/2/2007 4:32a | Well I have not given an update but I think I have lost a couple of pounds it is hard to say really as my scales bounce around a bit, we need some new ones but I figure that can wait until Dave looses enough to use them too.
I have not been as strict as Dave as while he is away the kids and I have been using things up out of the freezer that are not diet friendly. However I have started eating oatmeal made with water, with some cinimon and no sugar in the morning as that I have discovered to be the most filling low fat breakfast.
I know my problem is snacking so I think I will loose even if all I actually do is cut out anything in between meals. The only problem I have is that Mikey is a real 'little and often guy' and I loose count of the times he says 'I'm really hungry' in the day (it is never just 'I'm hungry' always 'I'm REALLY hungry') That is really cute but somtimes gets me thinking mmm yes I could do with a snack. That is where Grapefruits have come in handy, it takes so long to peel and eat one (shareing with Jess as she loves them) that by the time I'm done I feel full. |

| amazedncal2 Fri 2/2/2007 7:53a | I'm finding that I like eating something every 2-3 hours :) My days have been going something like this: hot or cold cereal-fruit-yogurt-a piece of good for you bread or some good for you crackers-fruit-maybe some almonds-a healthy but yummy dinner-popcorn or a skinny cow or a 1/3cup scoop of low fat ice cream in a cone. I've always been a slow eater so that helps.
I have noticed that my stomach (the inside part not the outside/waistline :) must have shrunk a bit because on the occasions that we have gone out to dinner I honestly can't eat as much as I used to :)
This weekend I am going to lunch with my mom and sisters and then we'll probably do something with the "kids" on Superbowl Sunday. I'm seeing extra food and calories in my weekend but I'll be good when I can and chalk the rest up to life and put the brakes back on on Monday :)
Have a great weekend everyone :) |
