RAM, if I may ask, what is Fat Tuesday? I saw it on a sign as we drove through Calistoga yesterday. I honestly had never heard of it before that and now here it is on LP :) |

| tiggerdis_ Mon 2/19/2007 5:51p | dave, how are things going for you? Have you talked to your doctor again?
I FINALLY managed to beat my girlfriend this week. Weight loss wasn't much, but considering I "enjoyed" myself on Valentine's day, I think I did well.
Keep up the good work all, and ajnhollysmommy, I' jealous!!! Way to go. |

| Autopia Deb Mon 2/19/2007 9:43p | Fat Tuesday is a day of indulgence before Ash Wednesday and lent. It's an excuse to PARTAY before fasting.
If someone actually raised with the tradition wants to chime in w/ more accurate info, I won't take it personal like. |

| davewasbaloo Tue 2/20/2007 1:04a | Thanks Tiggerdis, I'm back in in a week. Currently trying to lose weight living in hotels and restaurants this week - not good!
Fat Tuesday (Mardi = Tuesday in French and Gras - meaning fat) is when people get rid of all the bad things before lent. The traditional idea is you are supposed to give up fats, or fast, or give up something sinful as penitence over lent. Therefore in England and Holland it's traditional to eat Pancakes - It's called pancake day in the UK now. In Germany, it's traditional to drink Champagne during Karnival. In Brazil, local samba groups parade through the towns, in New Orleans it used to be about floats and bourbon, now it seems to be breasts and beads!
The reality is it started as a "let's clear out the pantry before lent", moved to in some places "let's party hard before we have to be good for 40 days" to "Good excuse to party".
What is really quite interesting (QI - for UK TV fans) is that the theme of hedonism and flamboyance of New Orleans Mardi Gras and Brazillian Carnival has been adopted by gays around the globe as cities such as Sydney and Berlin host Mardi Gras festivals in the summer to celebrate gay pride.
Aren't people and cultures fascinating? |

| amazedncal2 Tue 2/20/2007 8:06a | congrats sarah :)
So, Mardi Gras started as a celebration before Lent? Now I know why I've been seeing Karnival flashed on the TV screen and parades and other things I thought were odd that they were news :) There didn't seem to be any back story, just that there were celebrations starting.
Thank you AutopiaDeb and davewasbaloo for the information. I learned something new today :)
I weigh in tomorrow so I'm going to be on my BEST behavior today. No Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras or Karnival for me :) Although pancakes are sounding mighty good right now :) ummm, pancakes! |
