Captain Nemo has a lot of interesting angles:
1. Reclusive genius looking to better humanity 2. A bit of a violent streak when it comes to those perpetuating or applying human injustice 3. Spectacular opportunities for special effects laden movies and theme park tie-ins
Disney pretty much set the standard for creativity with their original interpretation of the Nautilus submarine - a mix of industrial revolution steel and brass along with a kind of biological themeing.
Seems like the creative possibilities would be endless. |

Disney should have done something, but the original is still terrific... so... |

Any links to that project?
Can't believe somebody would do another 20K Leagues after the masterful Disney version.
Connery's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen should have been the last attempt at using the Nemo character in a movie not faithful to the Verne characterization.
At least the production of Mysterious Island done back in the 70's(?) had the good sense to use a Nautilus that captured some of the Disney design qualities and featured a Nemo (Herbert Lom?) who had some of the same qualities as the brilliant James Mason portrayal. |

Verne's Captain Nemo has popped up from time to time. MGM released Captain Nemo and the Underwater City in 1969. Jose Ferrer played Nemo in a pretty bad movie that spawned a short lived TV series in 1978. Omar Shariff also played Nemo in a foreign production in 1973. |

Patrick Stuart played Nemo in a recent TV miniseries.

Any update on this? I wasn't able to find anything about a new 20K movie on google or through my normal methods. |

He didn't want to reprise the character. Herbert Lom, though was an excellent choice. It was years before I was convinced that the same actor (Lom) played both Capt Nemo, and Chief Inspector Dryfuss in the the Peter Sellers Pink Panther movies. There are very few actors today (or ever) who could pull off such distinct roles. |
