I just returned from my trip and I had a wonderful time despite the brutal cold I fought the entire stay. The weather was beautiful and everything was great.
I do have one complaint however with the computer system at Disney resorts used for express airline check-in. I was really happy that I could check in for my flight at the resort because my luggage was very heavy and with all the other bags of souvenirs that we had purchased, it was great to know that the resort was going to send my heavy luggage on to the airport ahead of me. Well due to the aged computer system they are still using, my express check in could not be accepted because of an apostrophe in my last name! The computer would not recognize it. The desk personel at the Caribbean Beach Resort were very friendly and appologetic, but told me because of their old system, I would have to bring the heavy luggage myself on the Magical Express and check in at the airport. Well, with the miserable cold I had, it was not fun lugging 2 heavy suitcases and 4 bags of stuff up one floor and across the entire terminal at MCO to the Jetblue check in counter. It was EXTREMELY inconvienent that I was denied this perk of Disney resort guests all because of the spelling of my last name.
Disney needs to address this problem immediately. There was another woman at my resort who also had this problem because of a hyphen in her last name. This is just a important tip to anyone with these kind of surnames.

NY - I'd recommend you either e mail or send a snail mail to Guest Communications. While there are no special characters in my last name, I think it's unacceptable for them to have software in use that they KNOW will not work for a certain percentage of their visitors!

interesting as both my daughters have hyphenated first names and their stuff always prints out correctly ?

This may not be a systemwide issue - or as is many times the case when computers get blamed - operator incompetence. Now it could very well be the software - but when users start saying things like " my old system " it usually means they couldn't tell an old system from a pooh plush.
Seems there should have been a way to still recognize you -- there are people who have last names that exceed character limits etc...yet they are not blocked out from systems....

I don't know enough about the tool to offer a fair assessment - but something doesn't seem right with the explanation and outcome you received

If you're experience occured at the Express Check-In kiosks, there really isn't anything Disney can do. The check-in desk is not operated by Disney but by members of the TSA (or some other outside agency). If there was a computer problem, I imagine that is also not a problem that could be handled by Disney, but by the TSA. Since it has to do with flights, it's surely out of Disney's control.

Considering all of the strict security measures that have been put in place since 9/11, I'm not surprised that something as silly as a name misspelling kept you from checking in at the resort.

To clarify, I mean that you were prevented from checking in for your plane at the resort, not that you were prevented from checking in as a hotel guest at the resort.

According the Deb Wills' AllEars.net:

<<This service is not provided by Disney. A third-party company approved by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) operates the Resort Airline Check-In on behalf of the participating airlines.>>

The last time we used Disney Travel their program wouldn't allow for hyphenated names. I can't remember if I had to leave a space where the hyphen goes or if I just had to join both names. Thankfully it didn't cause any problems at the airport.
