For the same reason every thread that mentions DCA degenerates into a discussion about Eisner, Pressler and Braverman having no taste?

<<< Why does every TDR thread seem to degenerate into a discussion about travel costs to Japan? >>>

That's a bit of an exaggeration, but of those that do, it's usually because someone inevitably brings up travel cost as the reason why they can't visit TDR, even though they might go once a year (if not more frequently) to WDW.

Except for Mr X, none of us are able to see Fortress Exploration in person unless we make an international trip to Japan, and many people think about such a trip for all of a half-second before deciding "it's too expensive" without really knowing any of the particulars.

^^ My point is that those discussions are all so theoretical. Saying that low season "can" be $130 or so means trying to find that price and then be willing to brave the ills of a Japanese winter. I just don't see any real benefit in that type of discussion. Now if you were comparing specifics I could see that being worthwhile but these threads always seem to peter out with a conversation about why you should ditch WDW for TDR and TDLFAN's profession. Just seems strange to keep rehashing the same stuff.

Much like Darkbeer and his DCA obsession. :-p

Oh i don't know SD. My plans to go to TDL are very real. However, when our WDW trip was only about 30% more than our DLP trips, then we went there. TDL is more than double for us which means scrimping and going without a trip, or waiting a few years to go when the kids are older. For me, I will wait. Especially as we want to do it properly - Stay at the Miracosta and the TDL Hotel when it opens. Ride the bullet. enjoy a japanese bath, kabuki play, dine on fine meals, and spending 5 days at TDL and at least 3 weeks exploring the rest of the country. A trip on the cheap is not an option. And also, most regular visitors from LP are there because they are on business or going solo. I can afford to go solo, but I can't afford to splurge for 4 people at this stage without sacrificing a couple of years of vacations.

<<A trip on the cheap is not an option.>>

I think that is a serious issue for most people. Why should your first experience of TDR be staying off-property like the Palm & Fountain and having to bus or train it through the suburb? Those hotels are comparable to All Stars/Pop Century in terms of amenities but they don't have the immersive Disney experience and personally I can't fathom why OLC continues to develop these value offerings.

<<< Most people just don't want to go there, for a variety of reasons, no matter how excellent a place it is. It's a combination of cost, fear, and who knows what else. >>>

I totally understand that. I think that the fear and the who knows what else parts are usually what the issue is, even if people don't want to really admit it to themselves. The cost issue is a very easy thing to bring up when you don't want to address the others.

It's also really easy to make assumptions about cost, with Japan's reputation for being expensive and all. A lot of people might think "wow - it must be like $100 a day to get into TDL" when in fact it's actually cheaper than any of the US parks.

The other thing is, if i was the head of a family, I wouldn't want them to just see TDR... I would want to show my kids some of Japan too, as davewasbaloo is doing. That would drive up the cost even further.

That's not to say that that means a family should rule out a trip to Japan completely because it would be too expense, but it's all too easy for single people to make a judgement on how "simple" it is to travel.

Maybe because some people keep complaining about it being too expensive? :-)

<<< Why should your first experience of TDR be staying off-property like the Palm & Fountain and having to bus or train it through the suburb? >>>

I wouldn't. But, if I was on a limited budget, and my choice was to do that or not go at all, I think doing it on the cheap would at least be worth considering.

On my first trip to Hong Kong in 1996, we rode in the back of the airplane and stayed in the dormitory rooms at the YMCA because that's all we could afford. There's no way I would want to travel that way now, but if I had waited until I could afford to do it right by flying business class and staying at the Peninsula next door, I would have missed out. And I would not want to trade that experience for anything.
