^^ Your HK scenario is two extremes though. Most people are comfortable enough in the decision to fly coach (and put up with it) but would want a safer and more comfortable hotel experience. That is the reality and that reality does not come cheap when you have a family. I don't have those concerns at all and I appreciate the freedoms that it gives me.

Some splurging is good, but personally I don't want to travel first-class exclusively. IMO spending more money just buys you the tourist-eye view of a place. Especially when it comes to food. I want to eat what the locals eat.

There's no denying though that there is little need to worry about safety in Tokyo.

Oh, I do want to try the local stuff too, but Kobe beef is high on the list of priorities and I might try fugu.

I used the Peninsula to make a point - I've never stayed there and don't really like places like that. My point is that you miss out on things if you set a minimum standard above what you can afford, when there are perfectly viable alternatives. I guess I would put a line of reasoning of "All I can afford is the Palm & Fountain Terrace, but I don't want to see suburbs when I'm on the bus to the resort, so I just won't go" to be along the same lines of "I want to stay at WDW for a week, but all I can afford is the Pop Century, so I just won't go."

Well, maybe such a person might consider staying at WDW for less than a week in exchange for affording a moderate resort, or maybe they decide that Pop isn't so bad after all if the alternative is to sit at home on the sofa and not go at all. But I see many people who claim to be interested in visiting TDR make exactly this sort of decision.

^^^ and more to the point, making false assumptions about any number of logistical or cost issues related to a TDR visit, which is what prompts some of us to add our thoughts on the matter.

Ah, but you see, we also do not stay at the Pop resorts currently. I went some time between visits so we could have a deluxe Savannah View at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.

>>TDL is more than double for us which means scrimping and going without a trip, or waiting a few years to go when the kids are older.<<
Baloo.. you need to get your priorities in order here... The kids and wifey do NOT have to come... that way it'll be cheaper to do.
>>Those hotels are comparable to All Stars/Pop Century in terms of amenities but they don't have the immersive Disney experience and personally I can't fathom why OLC continues to develop these value offerings.<<
Personally I don't fathom why WDW ever offered them in the first place!!! Talk about a step down in class for a so-called "World" class resort.

>>>Ride the bullet. enjoy a japanese bath, kabuki play, dine on fine meals, and spending 5 days at TDL and at least 3 weeks exploring the rest of the country.<<<

Hear me now and thank me later...

Skip the Kabuki. ;)

The divorce settlement would cost far more than the trip to Japan!
