<<I think the challenge is how to accept the reality of what the local market wants while still maintaining the pixie dust to keep everything uniquely Disney and being able to maintain the magic to the local market over the long term.>>

Another great point SD. I actually feel that the split between E! and DCE can work effectively providing they both stick to what they are good at. It is encouraging to see product like BraviSEAmo! and Mythica surface at TDR but there is still a way to go to get a good balance.

<<>>There is no real creativity there (TDR)<<

Bull! Unless your idea of creativy is different than mine.. that comment dismisses the hard work that is put by the dozens of performers who give it all out day after day. The TDR shows have the best choreographies of any of the regular themepark type shows of their kind, many props to enhance the experience and great music that is original most of the time... How can you even begin to say there is no creativity there is ludicrous. Not every freaking show at TDR has to be another boring improv production like Aladdin at DCA. >>

All a matter of opinion. If it all comes down to hard work (and there is no dispute from me that the TDR performers work exceptionally hard), a few props and original music for you then great. I need something else. Usually a tight and engaging script. Find Stitch! is a perfect example of a show that has a tremendous amount of energy and eye candy but left me cold asking what the heck is this whirling in front of me?

TDLFAN I suspect the answer is that you have a mindset very similar to the local Japanese audience. You love the character shows, special events and free gifts to such a degree that you fanatically plan your schedule around it. That is exactly what OLC wants and you obviously get a great kick out of it. For me it is more about quality in my mind than quantity. I don't need a celebration all the time at every park. I just get tired of seeing banners scattered around the parks that are unthemed to their location but tied to an event. Reason why I'm so glad that the YOMD campaign has blanketed the parks with banners. You have already indicated that the want a 25th celebration for Epcot. Me I'm not bothered at all. I'm happy to see the small fixes like Mexico and Canada go unmarketed so that guests will get a pleasant surprise when they see them.

<<< <<Take a look at the popularity of the old Sindbad or Encore. >>

I can only say what the guest satisfaction surveys told OLC and that was that they had no idea what was inside the show building and so decided to skip it. >>>

If that's the case, then it would seem that retooling the attraction with what sounds like a different story and a completely different soundtrack and relationship of the soundtrack to the story doesn't make sense. Making all of those changes won't help the attraction if the problem was people not knowing what's inside. And if they can fix the entrance/facade so that people know what's inside, that could be done without changing the attraction. So I think there's more going on here.

^^ Maybe. The telling thing for me is that the attraction has tanked since the previews back in August '01. How could anyone have known about it then?

One thing is for certain: TDS will sell a lot of tiger cubs. :-)

I forgot to add that I believe the other issue with Sindbad is that it is neither:

a) a recognizable storyline or character piece; or
b) one of the marketable E-tickets in the park.

So much of TDS is driven by either Disney characters (like Mermaid and Aladdin) or properties that the Japanese know such as Indy or the "thrill" rides like Journey. I just think Sindbad slipped through the cracks and down the priority list of most guests.

<<< Same for the Japanese audience. They love Cirque and big musical shows like Phantom, Cats and TLK. That is why I'm so confused as to why they accept such poor shows (particularly the special events) at TDR. I just wonder whether they have been conditioned over the years to accepting the very generic character shows that they pump out at TDR. >>>

Guest come to TDR for the whole picture; attractions, shows, food, characters, shopping, and so on. A new show or event is just an added bonus. I think the audience here in Japan is just devoted to being a part of the Disney experience. The die hards here in Japan are probably just as one sided as to if a thing is good or bad as so many people here can be. But let us not forget that there are people who come to a Disney park (no matter where) and know nothing less than they had a good day and made new memories.

<<The die hards here in Japan are probably just as one sided as to if a thing is good or bad as so many people here can be.>>

I can't put my finger on it I must admit. Maybe it is just that they are more visible or just great numbers of diehards but they are there no matter what. I know that TDR has the highest average use rate amongst APs and they have thousands that visit the park weekly at least. The crowd are certainly more suspectible to being fanatical than you see in the US. Seeing young girls and office ladies walking around in specific character clothing and having bags laden with plush is pretty unique. The fact that they bring their plush toys to watch the parade is definitely something I have never seen a grown adult do outside of TDR. I guess the long and the short of it is that OLC are very fortunate to have such an audience that soaks up all of this stuff. It really is remarkable.

<<Guest come to TDR for the whole picture; attractions, shows, food, characters, shopping, and so on. A new show or event is just an added bonus.>>

That is my question. It certainly seems that a huge percentage of day guests are there purely to wait for hours to see the special events and nothing else. You just don't seem to get that elsewhere even at DLR where there is a big AP base. I know a lot of DLR APs who are happy to just wander around the parks at the weekend soaking it all up. It is a different tack in Maihama.

Well the one day guests seem to want it all. I can't tell you how many times I have seen guests run to a parade as if they had no idea it was parade time. Yes, the die hards are out walking in circles over their fav spot until the one hour announcement rings out and they dive to the ground. Then as you say, they line up their stuffed animals in hand made costumes on the front row, even a better seat than themselves. But there are those one day guests out there who see events as an added bonus. It may not be the same as last year or five years ago, but it is what they get as their bonus entertainment. For the day they chose. You still see tons of folks on the way home at the train station at close time with bags of goods bigger than their kids. Die hards are what they are, but the one day, once a year, once every five years, or once in a lifetime guests, are the guests that love it all. The whole picture. again just my opinion

^^ Good post TDRboy38.

<<Die hards are what they are, but the one day, once a year, once every five years, or once in a lifetime guests, are the guests that love it all.>>

Very true. I just can't seem to tell the difference between the diehards and the average guest. The fanatism just seems to grab everyone.

Perhaps you can tell me TDRboy38 if you think this is just a part of Japanese (and to a larger extent) Asian society? A sort of all-or-nothing kind attitude.
