<<There is no need for DLR to be slow at this time of the year if they did little things like they do at TDR to fill the parks after holiday periods.>>

Big difference though is the guest spend aspect. In Japanese culture it is customary to take gifts home on a trip. Hence why virtually everyone leaves with a bag of merch. Plus a huge chunk have splashed out on the admission ticket as APers are a smaller majority at TDR. The problem DLR has that we are talking about APers who are unlikely to spend additionally on that day. That is precisely why TDR holds these events. They cater for both markets (regular and non-regular guests). For DLR to attract non-APers to a special event means splashing the cash around and not necessarily getting the benefit.

So you are saying...americans are cheap and the japanese are not. Because I know I would spend more at the american parks if the quality of show and merchandise was there.

<<Besides... what do you think this YOMD campaign really is?? Promises of FREEBIES to get more victims to come to WDW!!! >>

Then you have missed the point of YOMD entirely. It isn't about freebies. Who is going to plan a trip around a free set of mouse ears, FP or a lanyard? It is about making dreams come true and having seen kids being picked to be the game spotter on KS, families be selected to open attractions and have characters ride with them I totally get it now. I was as skeptical as many but having seen it properly in action recently I'm totally convinced it is making a huge difference to a lot of guests. Empowering CMs to make a difference is a huge leap for WDW.

If you want to reduce it to that then fine. My point was that the Japanese buy gifts for a whole raft of people when they visit the parks (even APers). Visitors to the US parks by and large don't. And as WDW as a huge number of people there on multi-day tickets they aren't going to get even close to the same merch spend as a day visitor to TDR.

<<You seem very clueless about japanese culture and behaviors Lee.. I spend enough time in Japan to tell you that these patterns of behavior are seen *everywhere* in Japan, not just at TDR.>>

I'd bet good money that I have spent more time in Japan over the last decade than you and that I have visited more non-theme park destinations during that time too. I don't profess to being an expert by any stretch but working with the Japanese I feel I have a good understanding of their culture. I don't spend half a day there inside the park on my own.

I agree... but still, most guests' dreams will go unfulfilled. And let's face it.. the only dreams granted are those what Disney deems "dreams", not really the guests. Heck! I dream for workd peace or a nice 35th anniversary celebration for the resort... I don't see anyone at Disney granting my dream??? I know I am being silly but the point I am trying to make is... YOMD is a well intentioned marketing startegy, but terribly flawed.

Here's a short video clip showing the home team cheering section at a Japanese Major League Baseball game, complete with trumpets, custom-made robes, and cheerleaders with white gloves and whistles:

And you forget the pixiedust concept. If you see someone nearby being "touched" by a dream then you feel that you could be next or you get a positive vibe from seeing someone else be impacted.

Also you mentioned the YOMD banners earlier. Unless I'm totally blind I remember seeing very few inside the four parks last week. Very few indeed.

You most probably have, but the things you write about the japanese indicate otherwise, unless that happens to be by accident. And maybe you *should* spend half a day by yourself at the parks (I'll keep Lindsay entertained) so you can discover some things that only an unwandering mind could discover and appreciate.
