| leemac Wed 8/22/2007 2:41a | No news yet. When I can talk about it I will. Likely to be towards Christmas. You will just have to be a little patient - the parade is still 8 months away. |

Any news on what they are going to do with the Dreams on Parade floats? Storage, send to another park, destroy...? |

^^ Good question. I've not heard anything about the floats being repurposed elsewhere. Would be a great parade for MK though. :-)
Going forward there will be a lot more recycling of the entertainment product around the resorts so the type of thing will become more common. |

| tcsnwhite Wed 8/22/2007 4:21a | ^This recycling thing...do you know where that is coming from- Jay Rasulo, DCE, Anne Hamburger, Steven Davison?
How do the DCE folks feel about that?
Is it a money/budget issue?
I feel kind of concerned about that...I hope it doesn't mean that we see less new entertainment down the line overall. I can see it working with certain parks, but I would think some things might not transfer well to other parks, like isn't the parade route different in size and width depending on the park, and float size has to be considered? I can see sharing things between DL and HKDL, and TDL and WDW. Don't know about DLP. hmmmmm?

| Mr X Wed 8/22/2007 4:33a | I'm almost certain the vast majority of guests will NEVER see the same show twice in multiple resort locations (except maybe Europeans going to DisneyWorld maybe?).
Besides, the Tokyo to Hong Kong parade was changed so much it was virtually unrecognizable (and I PERFORMED in it long ago...but it totally seemed different except I was overly familiar with the floats). |

| leemac Wed 8/22/2007 6:26a | tcsnwhite I'm not going to address the specific political or commercial reasons behind the decision but if you think about it logically it makes a lot of sense: if a parade has a life beyond its run at a particular theme park then the budget is likely to be more and the scale can be increased accordingly. The counterargument is always how the logistics are handled. As DLP discovered to their detriment with Fantillusion it can cost almost as much to recycle and convert an existing parade as to create a new one.
On the shows front it also makes some sense. Look at HKDL: both of its stage shows are tweaked (and improved) versions of other productions. Tailor your product to the local market but keep the integrity. Makes a whole lot of sense to me. |

..and in regards to HKDL, it paid off handsomely. I just caught "Golden Mickeys" again this week and it's simply one of Disney's best stage shows in any of the theme parks. I me loves the Waterworks Parade. |

| tcsnwhite Thu 8/23/2007 1:54a | Lee, you said - "if a parade has a life beyond its run at a particular theme park then the budget is likely to be more and the scale can be increased accordingly."
the wording is a bit confusing to me. What do you mean by "the budget is likely to be more"?
I can understand recycling some of the parades, stage shows, and other entertainment spectacles. I would just hope that it doesn't go too far for the sake of just saving money or corporate not paying for anything new to be developed.
I do agree that it all depends on what the entertainment product (I hate that term) is...for example, Dreams on Parade is such a beautiful parade, I could see it being used elsewhere. The only issue with recycling or replicating Tokyo entertainment elsewhere is that big comparisons are likely to be made (well, in the fan community), and it can get pretty harsh. I can just imagine the amount of threads and comments on how some other park messed it up and so on. And sometimes (most of the time), those comparisons are warranted like in the case of Cinderellabration at the MK, which clearly was not done right.
I would hope that if things are reused and transfered elsewhere, that the quality be as good, if not better (and an improvement) than the original. HKDL is the prime example, to me, of how to do it right. And while I don't find the parade to be anything all that special, the way they reused elements from Tokyo was done very well.
I suppose if certain elements of the productions are reused or improved upon, or all together completely replicated elsewhere (like BPB at Disney's Hollywood Studios), that the quality be as good if not better than the previous forms, and that it all make sense from a creative direction/design perspective.
So, I kind of understand what you saying Lee. It will be interesting to see how it all works out with some of the upcoming things like BPB moving to DHS, and the rumor of the Stars and Motor Cars Parade going to WDSP. Makes me wonder what other ideas DCE has regarding this 'recycling' idea...? |
