Didn't think we'd forget did you? A huge update this week includes pirates updates; Mickey's WaterWorks news; construction photos and word on the Bizarro Disneyland in China that has recently been the subject of 'Net discussion. If that isn't enough, we also engage in rampant laziness.

In a week where they are literally giving tickets away, we ask 'Who's paying for all of this'? With the Hong Kong government leaving Disney to foot the bills, will this mean that we see more or less in the future? More to the point, when's that toilet near the entrance going to be finished? For answers to these deep and meaningful questions, not to mention important dates and promotions, jump aboard the latest crazy journey through This Week in Hong Kong Disneyland.

Pirates premieres, B-list celebrities and magic vegetables? Is this the work of some sleazy tabloid? That's entirely possible, but what we do know for sure is what is going on This Week in Hong Kong Disneyland. We also cover the latest closures, and require a tiny bit of class participation. Jump on board the gourd of fun!

Stephy and Terry huh? I guess no one is paying $1500 for a ticket to that primere ;).

Interesting about the new character and it's kind of what many of us here were saying before this park opened, which is bring NEW characters and attractions speciffically for this park, one that appeals directly to the Chinese market. While it would be silly not to have Mickey Mouse and Goofy there, why NOT make characters specifically for the audience there. Mulan alone isn't going to hack it ;). While you're at it, build specific lands, rides and concepts the Chinese can really get into. DL has gotten so lazy (and cheap ;)), they just think they can just transport anything out of Anaheim and it would be an instant sucess.

WRONG!!!!

It would've been great Disney went outside the box juuuust a little with this park. Instead of some castle at the end of Main St, why not a beautiful temple, something that represents Asia?? Hell, maybe there was something in 'Mulan' they could've represented. Just something original!!!!! I remeber a poster here (won't name names ;)) was trying to actually say HKDL was somehow 'original' just because they changed the exterior of TL and some of the interior of the stores on Main Street were designed differntly. Give me a FREAKING BREAK!!!! If THAT is the best Disney can do for 'originality', then please stop making these Wal Mart type parks! I'm not saying every inch of the park has to be completely new, not at all (we're not talking DisneySea money here ;)). They could still still do TL, Fl and all that, but why not something like an old South East Asia village circa 1700's or maybe just an attraction based on their MANY folk lore stories or hero's/heroines in China??? That country is what, 5-6,000 years old, give or take a few centuries and no one could come up with one....I mean ONE idea that could've captured a little of China while still being pretty much American anyway? But Buzz is just sooo much easier to put in I guess. Sigh

As far as I know... Disney's take on Mulan is not that well liked in China, so going that way would have been somewhat ill conceived. Don't you think?

WD, I have to say I think you may have had one too many Tsing Tao's when posting #68 :-). The last thing China needs is some American company coming in and developing a theme park based on its take on Chinese history. Disney does not have the reputation or experience with going into a foreign market and developing content based on local history, customs, or culture.

Disney does know how to build rich, immersive, and engaging theme parks, both of the MK and non-MK variety. Obviously, certain things need to be adjusted for local market needs, but this is totally different than building a theme park based on the history or culture of the local market. Whether they're willing or able to do so again going forward is another matter.
