>>I don't understand why they couldn't bring these same elements into China as well. <<
Again... it's all cultural. I don't think the same revisions to the way they did business at DLP would apply to the Chinese market. Besides, it's bad enough most merchandise CMs at HKDL follow you around trying to sell you something as if I was in some night market in the city. How much more chinese can you get???

"I would have love to see what a Chinesed influenced Frontierland would've looked like. I mean, ironically, the Chinese were JUST as responsible for Frontierland thanks to their woking on the railroad tracks, wouldn't it have been cool to have seen a 1800's Chinatown San Francisco AS Frontierland??? That could've still been very American while exploring a little of the Chinese history at the same time (and we could've gotten BTM too ;))."

I would have loved to see this- maybe there is hope as the years go on.

>>You mentioned a film...what about the new one at EPCOT? They created a new circlevision film for the China pavilion a few years ago, that might work.<<

Did they update the film at the Norway pavilion too? It was horrible.

>>Most of the changes done at DLP were NOT about the product, but more about cultural sensibilities... Selling wine, allowing CMs to go berseck, not cleaning the park as much... etc etc etc...<<

Hehe, and CMs smiling were too spooky, right? That's a thing I really appreciated when visiting the parks in US and Japan. Both CMs and guest were much more friendly. Especially Japan. I lost some coins in a store in DisneySea, and before I got the hold of myself, two guests were already on their knees picking them up for me. Can't see that happen in Europe.

As a matter of fact, the entire Maelstrom ride and movie theater are currently under refurbishing and a huge temporary wall has been put up in front of the main entrance into that ride.
However, I do not know if there will be a new film or if the film will be deleted altogether. I do know that the ride is a bit short and needs to be upgraded with some new magic. I am not expecting changes there...

One other thing about HKDL's design I wanted to bring up: the lead designer was WDI's Wing Chao, a Chinese native. Presumably, he was in a position to take the local cultural and interest issues into account during the park's design. Separate from that, I do think that the park's problem isn't that it's not Chinese enough - the problem is that there's not enough to do.

And more specifically, the park functions properly only if daily attendance is within a narrow window that it unfortunately rarely reaches. If it's too low (as it is on most days), then everything is basically a walk-on, which means you can do absolutely everything in the park and have hours to spare. And on certain days (such as Chinese holidays) that produce peak attendance, it's a madhouse.

It was just announced on the press that HKDL's IASW will open in April 2008.

This week's column is literally full of dangerous goods. At least that is what they've got behind Adventureland. Plus, we ponder pirates; observe Ocean Park and look ahead to the opening of 'it's a small world'.

ORWEN: Oh, Loomis, duckling!! Could you and would you tell us Cauldron girls when your gallery section will be up and running on your web-footed site again? We always enjoyed conjuring it up inside the crystal ball but, lately, we haven't seen a gallery section listed. We knew you were overhauling things, of course. Maybe this part of the overhaul isn't ready to be seen yet? Anyway, we were just wondering because everybody in Morva has always been amazed at your gallery section in the past. Hugs & Kisses from the marshes!

The gallery section is definitely still there, Witches.

Simply expand the "multimedia" section and the gallery should be listed there. It's a bit misleading, I know. We are working on a front page for the multimedia section and it - along with some other updates - should be up this coming weekend.

Alternatively, go directly to this link:
