I hear that Vero Beach is a fantastic get away, fully owned and operated by the DVC. I have never been and am thinking about going. Does anyone know anything about it?

I've been there, but not stayed. Vero is a pretty quiet town (unless it is Spring Training time) so there isn't a lot to do outside the resort. It is in a beautiful location and right on a nice beach.

If you like a quiet, relaxing, no stress vacation then I would recommend it. But, if you get bored easily then you should probably stay in Orlando.

And, alas, it's gonna get even quieter -the Dodgers are moving their spring training from Vero Beach to Arizona in 2009. The city's keeping the practice fields and whatnot intact, so there's always a chance that another MLB team will move in.

Dodgers will be replaced by the Baltimore Orioles the last I heard.

Disney's Vero Beach resort is a true gem is all I can say. We added it to our itinerary about 6 years ago. After 8-10 days at WDW we drive to Vero Beach for a vacation from our vacation.

The resort is run with the type of customer service people like me whine about being gonemany times from WDW these days. The Cast members attention and general demeanor could not be better. Now if someoneis going here looking for a WDW like experience - wrong place. Disney 'touches' abound ( Mickey's hand on the elevators in the Inn, hidden Mickey's , a Mickey shaped pool etc... but this is a beach resort , pure and simple.

Now there are things to do virtually every hour of the day for kids of all ages, ranging from all kinds of crafts run in an indoor area near the pool....everything from making cels to customizing umbrellas and t shirts - they have Bingo for the kids with small prizes, sand castle making,crafts- beading etc....
there is a 9 hole miniature golf course next to the pool, nominal charge and free on member day. They had teenage games, tennis lessons, surfing lessons, golf courses are nearby and they make arrangements. The beach is a private beach, very nice with wave runners and catamarans you can rent- as well as 'boogie boards' - lounge chairs and umbrellas -- the pool has a 2 1/2 story slide - on various days they have DJ outside in the gazeebo - and a plae to get food by the pool. They show movies outside at night.

For adults there is the Green Cabin Room, a full service ( food also) bar that overlooks the ocean - wine tasting one night a week, and two great restaurants - Sonya's and Shutters.

In the area are two Fruit Groves - Hale Groves and Petersons - both offering local Indian River citrus specialities - fun to go to....

I cannot speak highly enough of this resort. We usually stay in the Inn portion ( vs. the DVC portion) -as we get a room with an ocean view - it's marvelous and you literally are overlooking the beach.
